The first week of school ends with a busy weekend in Bucharest. The National Arena becomes the centre of pop culture, music leaves the concert halls and takes over the streets of Floreasca, while Calea Victoriei hosts a market dedicated to local products and responsible consumption.

Families with young children have a festival designed especially for them, book lovers can visit Sector 6’s first open-air book fair, and the George Enescu International Competition offers both ticketed concerts and free-admission sessions.

Comic Con takes over the National Arena for three days

East European Comic Con takes place between 11 and 13 September at the National Arena. The event brings together fans of films, television series, comic books, video games, technology, anime, manga, board games and trading card games.

The ticketing page lists 15:00 as the event’s opening time and displays an active ticket-purchase option. However, the programme for each day should be checked separately, especially if you want to attend a specific panel, meeting or activity.

English is the event’s main official language. This detail may matter to parents attending with children or teenagers who want to select activities suited to their age and interests.

Music takes to the streets at Sound District Floreasca

The first edition of Sound District Floreasca begins on Friday at 19:00 in Verdi Park. The opening performance is presented by the Ion Dacian National Operetta and Musical Theatre, followed at 20:30 by a special symphonic concert featuring Robin and the Backstabbers, conducted by Mircea Pădurariu.

On Saturday, the programme begins at 10:00 with “The Carnival of the Animals”, performed by the orchestra of the George Enescu National College of Music. Throughout the day, music spreads across Johann Strauss, Rachmaninoff, Bach, Bizet, Chopin, Mozart and Verdi streets.

The main Sound District Floreasca programme includes:

• 17:30 – recital by Alexandru Tomescu and Ștefania Turcu;
• 20:00 – Leyah;
• 21:30 – Bucharest National Opera concert.

Saturday’s programme also features piano, harp, cello and guitar recitals, jazz, ballet, musical puppetry, workshops and a procession led by the Barbarossa Samba Group. Admission to the concerts and activities is free.

Local products, sustainable ideas and book fairs

Greentopia returns on 12 and 13 September at Green Hours – Casa GDS, on Calea Victoriei. Admission is free, although registration is recommended for workshops with limited capacity.

According to the official Greentopia programme, Green Market is open on Saturday between 11:00 and 19:00, while Green Kids activities take place between 12:00 and 18:00. The debate titled “From intention to action: what prevents us from making sustainable choices?” begins at 16:30.

On Sunday, the local eco-products market is open between 11:00 and 17:00. The programme also includes activities for children, workshops on energy and climate change, discussions about eco-anxiety and a meeting dedicated to environmental initiatives.

In Sector 6, Piațeta Favorit hosts “Grădina cu Cărți” between 11 and 13 September. The event is presented as the district’s first open-air book fair. Visitors are invited to bring books and school supplies in good condition, which will be redistributed to other members of the community through SocialXChange.

At the time of checking, the announcement for “Grădina cu Cărți” did not specify daily opening hours. If you are travelling there specifically to make a donation, check the latest programme published by the Sector 6 City Hall before setting out.

Bebe Fest OCC and performances for children

Bebe Fest OCC begins on Friday, 11 September, in the courtyard of the Comic Opera for Children, at 16 Calea Giulești. The festival is designed for children aged three and under and their parents.

The programme for the first weekend is:

• Friday: 16:00–20:00;
• Saturday: 10:00–20:00;
• Sunday: 10:00–20:00.

Admission to the festival is free, although some activities require OCC tokens loaded onto the card available at the venue. One token costs 3 lei. Performances of “Bubu visează”, created for children aged 0–3, are also scheduled in the UnderGrant Hall.

For older children, the Comic Opera for Children programme includes “Gianni Schicchi”, recommended for audiences aged seven and over. Performances take place on Friday at 18:30, Saturday at 17:00 and Sunday at 11:00. “Fantoma și Magicianul”, recommended for children aged four and over, is scheduled for 10:00 on both Saturday and Sunday.

Classical music, with tickets or free admission

The George Enescu International Competition continues throughout the weekend. On Friday, at 9:30, the second day of the Piano Section’s first round takes place at the National University of Music Bucharest, with free admission.

The Violin Section Semi-final is also divided into two sessions on Friday. The first part, beginning at 10:00 and featuring works by George Enescu with piano accompaniment, is free to attend. The 16:00 session, featuring the Radio Chamber Orchestra and Deborah Nemțanu, requires a ticket.

The piano competition continues on Saturday at 9:30 with free admission. At 19:00, the Romanian Athenaeum hosts a recital by Alissa Margulis, Andrey Gugnin and Ștefan Cazacu. The Violin Section Final takes place on Sunday at 18:00, featuring the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Harry Ogg. Beware of outdated announcements: Masters of Classic has been postponed

Masters of Classic, originally announced for 12 and 13 September at Sala Palatului, will no longer take place this weekend. The festival has been postponed, and no new date had been confirmed when this article was published.

This clarification is necessary because several older pages and announcements still present the concerts as upcoming events. The organisers stated that ticket and festival-pass payments would be refunded through the platforms where they were purchased. Depending on the issuing bank, processing may take between one and three working days.

If you want to combine several stops, the simplest option is to choose events in the same area. A visit to Greentopia can be paired with a walk along Calea Victoriei, while Sound District requires more time because its activities are spread across Floreasca. Comic Con and the events at the Romanian Athenaeum have separate schedules and are best planned individually.
