Bucharest Stories: The Best-Known Brands “Born” in the Capital That Are Still Successful Today

Bucharest is not only the city of grand palaces, historic boulevards, and buildings that have survived the transformations of the past century. The capital has also been, and continues to be, an important starting point for businesses that have become well known throughout Romania and, in some cases, even abroad. Some of these stories began after 1990, during a period when the Romanian economy was undergoing radical changes. Others have their roots in the food industry of the communist era and managed to survive the changes of regime, privatization, and international competition. A special case is that of Heidi chocolate, a brand with Swiss origins but whose Romanian production story began in Pantelimon, in the immediate vicinity of Bucharest. Bitdefender, Meli Melo, Mobexpert, ROM, and Heidi operate in very different fields, but they have something important in common: all of them have connected an essential part of their identity and development to Bucharest and the surrounding metropolitan area.
Bitdefender, the technology company that took Bucharest into the global cybersecurity industry
Few business stories that began in Bucharest have had an international evolution as remarkable as that of Bitdefender. The company was founded in 2001 in Bucharest and developed from a Romanian software business into a name recognized in the global cybersecurity industry. The company continues to have its global headquarters in Bucharest, where it also maintains one of its important research and innovation centers.
The Bitdefender story should, however, be viewed in a broader context. The company's origins go back to the years following 1990, when Florin and Măriuca Talpeș laid the foundations of a private software company. At a time when Romania's IT industry was still in its early stages, the development of antivirus solutions gradually became the company's main business direction. In 2001, this activity entered a new stage under the Bitdefender name.
Today, the company says that its solutions are used by millions of people and organizations in more than 170 countries. Bitdefender invests heavily in research and development, and the company also highlights the development of artificial intelligence technologies for cybersecurity, which it began working on as early as 2008.
For Bucharest, Bitdefender's success has a special significance. In an industry dominated by major American and European companies, a brand created in Romania's capital has managed to compete on international markets and turn the city into one of the important centers of its global operations.
Meli Melo, from a small Bucharest store to a well-known fashion brand in Romania
The story of Meli Melo is different, but equally interesting. The brand began its journey in Bucharest in the 1990s, at a time when the Romanian retail market was undergoing profound transformation. The first Meli Melo store opened in the capital in 1998, founded by French entrepreneurs Hubert Larmaraud and Stephane Dumas.
The beginnings were much more modest than the scale the company would eventually reach. A report in the Romanian economic press states that the business had actually been launched in 1997, with an investment of approximately 100,000 dollars, starting from a cosmetics department featuring French products inside a Mega Image store. The company's development later focused on jewelry and women's accessories.
The first Meli Melo store opened in 1998 marked the moment when the concept began to take clearer shape. The brand benefited from changing tastes among Romanian consumers and from the emergence of a new commercial culture in which fashion accessories were becoming increasingly accessible to the general public.
Over time, Meli Melo expanded into Romania's major cities and also entered the online retail sector. The brand subsequently diversified its range, including into the home & deco segment, while maintaining its connection with the original idea of accessible accessories and decorative objects.
The fact that a business launched in a Bucharest undergoing economic transition managed to remain relevant for more than two decades says a great deal about the brand's ability to adapt. Meli Melo is therefore one of the representative stories of post-communist Bucharest retail.
Mobexpert, the story of the 150-square-meter store that became a nationwide group
Another name closely connected to Bucharest is Mobexpert. The story began on June 1, 1993, when Dan Șucu opened the first Mobexpert store inside Unirea Shopping Center. The store occupied only 150 square meters, and its offer focused mainly on office furniture.
The context was highly favorable for entrepreneurial initiatives. Romania had entered a new economic phase, while the furniture market was far from offering the diversity that consumers know today. For an entrepreneur, however, precisely this lack of a modern offer could represent an opportunity.
Mobexpert did not remain a simple retailer. The company began investing in manufacturing and developing its own industrial capacities. Furniture and mattress factories were established, and the group eventually became one of Romania's leading furniture manufacturers and exporters.
The development continued through the expansion of its store network, investments in logistics, and diversification of its product range. In 2009, the company commissioned its Logistics Center in Bucharest following an investment of 10 million euros, strengthening the infrastructure required for product distribution.
Today, Mobexpert is a group with stores, factories, and logistics infrastructure, and the company identifies 1993 as the year it was founded. The journey from a small retail space inside Unirea Shopping Center to an integrated manufacturing and retail business is one of the best-known Romanian entrepreneurial stories of the past three decades.
ROM, the chocolate bar that turned the name of Bucharest into a symbol of Romanian chocolate
If there is one brand that has remained almost organically connected to Bucharest's identity, it is ROM. The story of the chocolate bar began in 1964 at the Bucharest Confectionery Products Factory, a unit that would later become known as Excelent. This was where production began on the chocolate bar filled with a rum-flavored cream.
The product's first decades were closely connected to Bucharest. According to the Advertising Museum, the word “Bucharest” was printed on the chocolate bar, while the tin foil packaging referred to “rum,” the ingredient that gave the product its characteristic flavor. In this way, the city's name became part of the product's visual identity itself.
ROM benefited from an easily recognizable recipe and a visual identity that remained in the memory of several generations. After 1990, however, the brand entered a completely different market, in which store shelves began to be dominated by international products.
Excelent București was redefined in 1991, and in 2004 it merged with Kandia Timișoara, with the resulting company operating under the name Kandia-Excelent. The producer subsequently went through further changes in ownership and structure, but ROM continued to be one of its flagship brands.
ROM's success is particularly interesting because the brand did not attempt to hide its past. On the contrary, its Romanian identity was turned into a communication advantage. The product remained recognizable, while its marketing campaigns and packaging were adapted to changing times, allowing it to remain relevant to different generations.
Heidi, the chocolate “born” in Pantelimon, near Bucharest
Heidi represents the special case on this list. The brand is not Romanian in terms of the origins of its capital or the company's tradition, but its Romanian production story is closely connected to the place where it developed.
Heidi Chocolat was established in 1994, and the Swiss investment was developed in Pantelimon, Ilfov County, immediately next to Bucharest. Economic sources from that period described the project as a “greenfield” investment, meaning a new factory built specifically for chocolate production rather than an existing Romanian industrial facility that was taken over and modernized.
The company identifies 1994 as the year when the Heidi journey began, when a Swiss chocolatier laid the foundations of the first chocolate-making workshop. The first chocolate bars appeared in 1996, followed by seasonal figurines and later pralines.
The investment in Pantelimon was significant in a Romania that was only beginning to experience foreign investment and modern competition in the food industry. According to a 2001 report by Ziarul Financiar, the factory built by Swiss group Confiseur Läderach in Pantelimon was one of the greenfield investments in Romania's post-1989 chocolate industry.
Today, the company's headquarters are still located in Pantelimon, on Biruinței Boulevard, while the brand has a much broader portfolio than it did in its early years. The company promotes chocolate bars, pralines, chocolate snacks, and seasonal products, continuing to connect its identity with the tradition of Swiss chocolate-making and the production developed in Romania.
The Heidi story also demonstrates how useful it is to view Bucharest together with the communities immediately surrounding it. Pantelimon is not part of the capital itself, but it is so closely connected to Bucharest geographically and economically that the Heidi factory forms part of the same metropolitan development story.
Five different stories and the same lesson about Bucharest
Bitdefender, Meli Melo, Mobexpert, ROM, and Heidi belong to completely different worlds. The first operates in cybersecurity, the second in fashion and retail, Mobexpert in furniture, while ROM and Heidi belong to the chocolate industry. Nevertheless, each of these brands says something about the transformations Bucharest has experienced.
Bitdefender represents the capital's emergence as a center for technology and research. Meli Melo reflects changing consumer habits in the 1990s. Mobexpert illustrates the rise of Romanian entrepreneurship and the transformation of the retail sector. ROM preserves the memory of a food industry developed in Bucharest during the communist period, while Heidi demonstrates how an international investment can take root and grow in the immediate vicinity of the city.
Viewed together, these five stories demonstrate that a brand's success does not depend solely on the field in which it operates. The ability to understand a market, adapt, and preserve the elements that make a brand recognizable are equally important. And the fact that all these names continue to exist today shows that Bucharest was not merely the backdrop for these business stories, but one of the places where these stories actually began.
