Bucharest Could Get at Least 50 New Bicycle Racks. How Will the Locations Be Chosen?

Bucharest could get at least 50 new bicycle racks, installed in areas where cyclists regularly report a lack of suitable parking facilities. The measure is part of the proposed “InfraVelo București” initiative, submitted to the General Council of Bucharest (CGMB), and aims to identify the everyday infrastructure problems faced by people travelling on two wheels.

For now, the installation of the bicycle racks remains a proposed objective, rather than an approved investment or a project already underway. The initiative involves cooperation between Bucharest City Hall, the Bucharest–Ilfov Public Transport Intercommunity Development Association (ADI TPBI), and the HaicuBicla Association, supporting the implementation of Bucharest's Cycling Master Plan.

How Will the Locations for New Bicycle Racks Be Identified?

One of the project's main components is the creation of a digital map highlighting the problems cyclists encounter across Bucharest. Rather than selecting locations based solely on administrative estimates, the initiative proposes collecting information directly from people who regularly travel through the city.

Delivery couriers using bicycles, mopeds or scooters would play an important role. They would be able to voluntarily report their routes, areas they consider dangerous, and locations where cycling infrastructure is insufficient.

The information collected would also include places where bicycles are locked to trees or poles because dedicated parking facilities are unavailable. These observations could help identify areas where new bicycle racks would meet an existing need.

The lack of bicycle parking is just one of the difficulties facing cyclists in the Romanian capital. Disconnected cycle lanes, busy intersections and difficult road crossings continue to make cycling around Bucharest a challenging experience.

Under the InfraVelo initiative, the collected information would be analysed and displayed on a publicly accessible digital map. The project also includes a sociological survey to provide a clearer picture of travel habits and the obstacles encountered across the city.

The map would highlight not only areas lacking bicycle parking but also accident-prone locations, routes avoided for safety reasons and places where bicycle thefts have been reported.

Involving delivery couriers in discussions about cycling infrastructure is not entirely new. In September 2026, the HaicuBicla Association organised activities for bicycle couriers in Herăstrău Park, including free technical checks and discussions about everyday traffic problems.

At Least 50 Bicycle Racks Among the Project's Objectives

According to official documentation published by Bucharest City Hall, one of InfraVelo București's proposed outcomes is the installation of at least 50 safe and functional bicycle racks in priority locations identified through the project.

However, the document does not provide a list of streets, neighbourhoods or intersections where the racks would be installed. The locations would be selected at a later stage, based on the collected information and an assessment of infrastructure needs.

The initiative aims to reduce the number of bicycles locked to unsuitable public structures, improve parking conditions and help reduce the risk of bicycle theft.

A properly designed bicycle rack should allow cyclists to secure their bicycles effectively, while its location should take into account available space and pedestrian movement. The number of racks therefore matters, but so does their placement and practical usability.

For residents who use bicycles for daily transport, access to secure parking can influence whether cycling is a realistic option. Without suitable facilities near their destination, cyclists may have to spend additional time looking for somewhere to leave their bicycles or risk parking them in unsuitable locations.

What Other Measures Are Being Proposed for Cyclists in Bucharest?

Installing new bicycle racks is only one part of the InfraVelo initiative. The project also includes measures intended to improve road safety, such as dedicated bicycle waiting areas at traffic lights, better visibility at intersections and suggested cycling route markings.

It also proposes pilot schemes that could allow bicycles to use selected sections of public transport lanes, subject to cooperation with the relevant authorities. Another proposal involves “School Streets”, designed to improve road safety around educational institutions.

These proposals do not mean cyclists will automatically be allowed to use STB bus lanes or that new infrastructure will appear immediately. Each measure would require further assessments, authorisations and approvals.

The initiative comes at a time when several urban redevelopment proposals in Bucharest include cycling infrastructure. For example, the planned redesign of Iuliu Maniu Boulevard, between Lujerului and Valea Cascadelor, includes physically separated bicycle lanes in both directions.

However, making cycling a practical alternative to driving requires more than individual infrastructure projects. Continuous routes, safer intersections and convenient bicycle parking near homes, workplaces and other destinations are all important parts of a functional cycling network.

When Could the New Bicycle Racks Be Installed?

At present, the InfraVelo documentation does not establish a specific installation timetable for the proposed 50 bicycle racks or a separate budget for purchasing and installing them.

The project includes a target of at least 500 reports from participating couriers, the development of a publicly accessible digital map and recommendations for the authorities responsible for road infrastructure.

The documentation also refers to activities planned for 2027, including the presentation of collected data and public events focused on urban mobility.

Approval of the cooperation agreement would not automatically mean approval of the investment in bicycle racks. The official project documentation states that the proposed activities do not constitute budgetary commitments. Any future construction work or purchases would have to follow the applicable legal procedures and depend on approved funding.

For Bucharest's cyclists, the next important steps will be identifying the actual locations and securing the necessary financing. Only then will it become clear where the new bicycle racks could appear and when residents might be able to use them.
