The May 1st mini-holiday marks, every year, the unofficial start of summer in Bucharest. Beyond festivals and urban events, one of the city’s most enduring traditions remains going to the public swimming pools and water parks — a habit that has survived for decades and returns every warm season.

In 2026, interest in Bucharest’s classic public pools is once again on the rise. Unlike premium venues or modern luxury concepts, these places offer accessibility, lower prices, and a familiar atmosphere known by generations of Bucharest residents.

Classic public pools, the affordable option for hot summer days

Neighborhood swimming pools remain a practical solution for those looking to cool off quickly without high costs or long trips. Most are located in easily accessible areas and provide basic facilities: pools for adults and children, sunbeds, shaded spaces, and relaxation areas.

In the context of rising prices over recent years, these options are becoming increasingly attractive. For many families, they represent the realistic choice for spending a summer day in the city.

Top 5 classic swimming pools in Bucharest

Moghioroș Pool (Drumul Taberei)

One of the best-known public pools in Bucharest, located in the western part of the city. Although modernized in recent years, it still preserves the classic neighborhood pool concept.

It has several pools, relaxation areas, and is easy to reach by public transportation. It is frequently chosen by families and residents of Sector 6.

Crângași Pool (Dâmbovița – Ciurel area)

A good option for those looking for more space and activities. Besides the swimming pools, it also includes sports and relaxation areas.

It is appreciated for its larger surface area and its ability to accommodate a high number of visitors during crowded summer weekends.

Giulești Pool

A classic alternative, generally less crowded compared to other locations. It is preferred by people looking for a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere.

The facilities are simple but sufficient for a summer day, and access is convenient for residents living in the northwestern part of Bucharest.

Văcărești Pool (Tineretului – southern area)

An affordable option for residents of southern Bucharest. Although smaller than other complexes, it offers decent conditions for relaxation.

It is mainly chosen by people looking for a quick alternative close to home.

Therme, a modern alternative for those who prefer comfort

Therme Bucharest is the largest wellness, relaxation, and thermal entertainment center in Europe and one of the most popular attractions near the Romanian capital. The complex stands out through its size, modern architecture, and exotic atmosphere maintained all year round under its huge glass dome, where temperatures remain warm regardless of the season. Therme is also home to Romania’s largest indoor botanical garden, featuring more than 800,000 plants and around 1,500 palm trees, along with orchids and other rare tropical species. Visitors have access to numerous indoor and outdoor thermal pools, themed saunas, water slides, and spa and wellness treatment areas.

The complex is divided into three distinct zones, each designed for a different type of experience. Galaxy is dedicated to families and includes water slides and activities for children, The Palm focuses on relaxation in a tropical setting, while Elysium offers a premium experience centered around special saunas and exclusive services. Therme features 10 thermal pools, 13 saunas, four mineral pools, and dozens of wellness activities included in the ticket price. During the warm season, visitors can also enjoy Sands of Therme, considered the largest urban beach in Europe, spread across more than 30,000 square meters with fine sand, sunbeds, bars, and outdoor pools.

How to choose the right swimming pool

For a quick decision, the main criteria are:

  •  Location: choose a nearby pool to avoid heavy traffic
  •  Budget: classic public pools are generally more affordable
  •  Facilities: some only offer swimming pools, while others include sports and relaxation areas
  •  Crowding level: during weekends, the differences can be significant

An old tradition that remains relevant

Although the number of modern pools and beach clubs has increased in recent years, Bucharest’s classic public pools continue to attract large numbers of visitors. They remain connected to a simple urban lifestyle, where summer begins with a day spent by the water, without complicated plans.

The current situation of Titan Pool (Cara)

One of the largest public pools in eastern Bucharest, known for its generously sized swimming basin.

Titan Pool was, for many years, one of the best-known and most visited public pools in Bucharest, especially for residents of the eastern part of the city. Also known by the popular names “Trei Ligheane” or “Cara,” the complex was an important recreation spot during summer, attracting families, children, and young people from Sector 3 and nearby neighborhoods. Its location, in a densely populated area close to schools, markets, and large residential districts, turned it into an urban landmark for generations of Bucharest residents.

Today, however, Titan Pool is in an advanced state of decay. The space is abandoned, unsanitary, and occupied by improvised constructions and unauthorized storage areas, while garbage and waste have accumulated in several sections. Local authorities claim the site now represents both a sanitary and fire hazard, describing it as a source of infection. The pools and infrastructure are completely deteriorated, and the entire area has moved far away from its original purpose as a place for recreation and leisure.
