Metrorex has announced the operating schedule of the Bucharest metro for the winter holiday period, which includes Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the first days of the new year. According to the company, trains will run on all metro lines, including during the night of New Year’s Eve, with intervals adjusted to the specifics of each day.
Christmas and public holiday metro schedule in December 2025
On December 25 and 26, 2025, the metro will operate according to the schedule normally applied on weekends and public holidays. The same schedule will also be valid on January 1–2, 2026, as well as during the period January 5–7, 2026.
On most lines, train intervals will be uniform. Thus, on Line 1 (Pantelimon – Dristor 2), Line 2 (Tudor Arghezi – Pipera), Line 3 (Preciziei – Anghel Saligny), and Line 5 (Eroilor 2 – Valea Ialomiței / Râul Doamnei), trains will run at intervals of approximately 9 minutes.
For Line 4, which connects Gara de Nord 2 and Străulești, Metrorex stated that trains will run at 12-minute intervals.
Metro services on New Year’s Eve night
An important aspect for Bucharest residents and for those attending New Year’s Eve events is that the metro will operate throughout the night of December 31 to January 1, on all lines.
According to Metrorex, the special New Year’s Eve schedule is as follows:
- between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., trains will run at intervals of approximately 10 minutes;
- between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., trains will run at intervals of around 20 minutes.
This schedule is intended to ensure public transport for people traveling to end-of-year events or returning home after midnight.
Line 2 remains the busiest in the network
In the context of the holidays, Metrorex also reiterated data regarding network usage. Line 2 (M2) continues to be the busiest metro line in Bucharest. The route, which links the southern part of the city to the Pipera district, serves both densely populated residential areas and major office hubs.
According to data published by Ziarul Financiar, five stations on Line 2 — Aurel Vlaicu, Piața Sudului, Universitate, Piața Unirii 1, and Piața Romană — recorded approximately 26 million ticket validations between January and November, representing nearly 18% of all validations across the Metrorex network.
Lower traffic on Line 5, but on an upward trend
At the opposite end is Line 5, which serves the Drumul Taberei neighborhood. It recorded approximately 6.5 million journeys in the first 11 months of the year, a lower level compared to the other lines.
