The Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History is organizing, on Friday, the third edition of the event “Cişmigiu under the Microscope”, held in Cişmigiu Park between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, as part of the project “The Splendor of the Garden”, initiated by the Environmental Directorate - Urban Ecology Service of the Bucharest City Hall.

The event is dedicated to the International Day of Zoos and Aquariums and offers the public a range of interactive and educational activities for all ages, designed to highlight the natural richness hidden right in the heart of the city.

Activities for the curious of all ages:

  • 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Secrets of the creatures in Cişmigiu Park and details about urban biodiversity. The meeting point is near the bandstand kiosk, where researchers from the Antipa Museum will guide participants through the world of mollusks, insects, plants, and microscopic details of nature:
    • Dr. Oana Paula Popa and Dr. Ana Maria Krapal – about mollusks and natural pearls;
    • Dr. Vlad Dincă and PhD student Andreea Cătălina Drăghici – about the park’s insects and their ecological role;
    • Sasha Scotniţchi – about urban plants and herbarium making;
    • Dr. Rozalia Motoc and PhD student Maxim Bâlcu – explorations using the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
  • 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Ornithological tour with Dr. Andrei Ştefan. This will be a guided walk to identify urban birds. For a more unique experience, participants are advised to bring binoculars or a camera.
  • 11:00 AM: Microscopy workshop “Soil Fauna” with Dr. Cristina Constantinescu – an exploration into the hidden world beneath our feet.
  • 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM: Coloring and crossword workshops for children featuring the fascinating capybara as the main character.
  • 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM: Animal stories – sessions of reading, play, and creative activities inspired by fables and beloved characters from nature.
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Urban ecology workshops organized by the Environmental Directorate team – presentations and guided tours to discover ancient trees and the historical-natural value of Cişmigiu Park.
  • 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM: First aid demonstration workshops with volunteers from the Red Cross, Bucharest Branch Sector 1.
  • 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Astronomy workshop hosted by the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy and the “Admiral Vasile Urseanu” Astronomical Observatory. Young explorers will learn about the Universe, urban heat islands, and will be able to observe the Sun with advanced telescopes.

Outdoor band music:

  • 4:45 PM - 6:00 PM: Concert by the Representative Music Band of the Romanian Gendarmerie
  • 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM: Performance by the 30th Guard Brigade “Mihai Viteazul” – Ministry of National Defense

Access to all activities is free, subject to available space.

The Antipa Museum is one of the most important museums in Romania and Eastern Europe, founded on November 3, 1834, on the initiative of the Great Ban Mihalache Ghica, who donated valuable collections of coins, fossils, animals, and works of art. Today, the Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History holds a scientific heritage of approximately 2 million specimens, grouped into zoological, geological, paleontological collections, as well as comparative anatomy, anthropology, and ethnography. With an average of over 500,000 visitors annually, the museum is among the most visited cultural institutions in Romania. The current building on Kiseleff Road no. 1 was designed by Dr. Grigore Antipa, director between 1893 and 1944, who modernized the exhibitions and introduced the world’s first biogeographical dioramas. The museum continues to inspire through research, education, and biodiversity promotion. Today, Antipa remains a benchmark in biodiversity research and nature conservation, as well as a space dedicated to education and discovery for visitors of all ages.
