For teenagers in Bucharest, summer is not just a break from school, but also a time when they spend more hours with friends outside the home. For a few months, the city becomes a place for meeting, exploring and gaining independence, from parks and shopping malls to street events, cafés, sports fields and activities organized especially for young people.
The way teenagers socialize has changed a lot in recent years. An important part of their interactions starts online, on WhatsApp groups, Instagram, TikTok or Discord, but face-to-face meetings remain essential. During the summer especially, groups of friends look for places that are accessible, safe, easy to reach by public transport and where they can spend a few hours without following a very strict plan.
Parks remain the easiest meeting places
Bucharest’s large parks are among the most popular social spaces for teenagers, especially in the evening, when temperatures become more bearable. Herăstrău, Tineretului, IOR, Cișmigiu, Carol and Drumul Taberei are places where young people go for walks, conversations, rollerblading, cycling, improvised picnics or simply to sit on the grass with their group of friends.
Tineretului Park is one of the best examples, precisely because it has large open areas, walking zones and is close to metro stations and several densely populated neighborhoods. According to information published by Bucharest City Hall through the Lakes, Parks and Leisure Administration, Tineretului Park covers 82.7 hectares and is one of the largest green spaces managed by the city.
For teenagers, the park is not only a place to relax, but also a space where they build their independence. For many, the first outings without parents take place in such areas: a drink bought from a kiosk, a walk around the lake, an hour spent on a bench or a meeting after tutoring or sports practice. That is why parks remain the most accessible option for groups that do not want to spend much money.
Another reason parks are preferred is flexibility. Teenagers can come and go easily, meet in larger groups and combine several activities: sports, conversations, social media photos, walks or participation in weekend events. During the summer months, these spaces practically become informal alternatives to clubs or terraces.
Calea Victoriei and street events attract more and more young people
In recent years, Calea Victoriei has become one of the most popular promenade areas for teenagers, especially during the weekends when “Open Streets – Bucharest, Urban Promenade” takes place. The event turns the city center into a pedestrian area, with cultural activities, artistic moments, workshops and spaces where people can spend time away from traffic.
The 2026 edition of “Open Streets – Bucharest” takes place between April 25 and October 11, over 25 weekends, according to ARCUB. For teenagers, the format is attractive because it combines walking, taking photos, meeting friends and access to free or easily accessible events.
Calea Victoriei has another advantage: it is easy to recognize and easy to use as a meeting point. Teenagers can meet at Romană, Universitate, Piața Revoluției or near the Romanian Athenaeum, then walk toward the Old Town, Cișmigiu or other nearby areas. For young people coming from different neighborhoods, the city center works as a common meeting point.
In addition, street events offer teenagers a different type of social interaction than malls or parks. Here, socializing happens around music, performances, workshops or the general atmosphere of the city. Even when many of them go without a very clear plan, simply taking part in an urban event becomes a group experience.
Malls, cinemas and cafés are the convenient option when it is too hot
During the summer, when temperatures are high, shopping malls remain among the most frequented meeting places for teenagers. The reasons are simple: air conditioning, food courts, cinemas, shops, gaming areas and easy access by public transport. For many young people, the mall is a safe and predictable place where they can spend a few hours without needing a complicated plan.
AFI Cotroceni, ParkLake, Mega Mall, Sun Plaza, Băneasa Shopping City and Promenada are among the places where teenagers often meet, depending on the neighborhood they live in. Very often, the outing starts with a movie, continues with a meal at the food court and ends with a walk through the shops or photos taken for social media.
Affordable cafés and fast-food chains are also social meeting points. Teenagers choose them because they can sit at a table, talk, use their phones and meet in small groups. In recent years, café areas in the city center, Floreasca, Dorobanți or Cotroceni have become increasingly attractive for high school students, especially for those looking for an “Instagrammable” setting.
However, malls do not completely replace outdoor meetings. They function mainly as a backup option on very hot or rainy days, or when the group wants a clear activity, such as cinema, bowling, billiards, arcade games or shopping.
Sports, volunteering and urban summer camps complete the holiday
Some teenagers in Bucharest use the summer for organized activities: courses, workshops, volunteering, sports or personal development programs. These are chosen either by parents or by young people themselves, especially when the holiday is long and there is a desire to combine free time with a useful experience.
PROEDUS, the Center for Educational and Sports Projects in Bucharest, runs programs dedicated to children and young people, including non-formal education activities. The institution presents projects aimed at developing young people through educational, sports and recreational activities, in a setting different from school.
One example is the area of summer camps and holiday activities, where the focus is on learning through play, collaboration and competition. According to PROEDUS, the objectives of these programs include creating opportunities for young people to learn in a fun, non-formal and competitive way.
Sport is another important form of socializing. Football, basketball or tennis courts, climbing gyms, dance clubs, swimming, cycling or rollerblading are activities through which teenagers make friends outside their school circle. During the summer, these outings become more frequent, especially in the morning or evening, when the temperature is more manageable.
Volunteering also attracts teenagers who want to gain experience, use their time in a meaningful way or build a stronger profile for high school, university or future applications. Cultural events, festivals, youth projects and community activities can become good social contexts, especially for teenagers who do not necessarily relate to the classic outings to the mall.
The Old Town, promenade areas and photo spots
For older teenagers, the Old Town, University Square, the area around the Romanian Athenaeum, Calea Victoriei, Cotroceni, Carol Park and the Lacul Morii area are favorite places for walks and photos. Not all of these outings have a clear purpose. Sometimes the plan is simply “let’s meet downtown,” and the group decides on the spot where to go next.
Social media has a strong influence on how teenagers choose their meeting places. A space with an interesting façade, a café with a special design, a park with good sunset light or a well-known street can quickly become a meeting point. For young people, the city is also a backdrop for photos, stories and short videos.
At the same time, central areas offer access to several activities during a single outing: walking, cafés, bookstores, cinemas, museums, street events or parks. This variety matters a lot to teenagers, especially when the group does not share the exact same preferences.
What teenagers are really looking for when they go out in the city during summer
Beyond the specific places, teenagers are mainly looking for freedom, belonging and shared experiences. Summer gives them more time to meet without the pressure of homework, tests or the fixed school schedule. For many of them, city outings are a way to strengthen friendships and test their independence.
Their favorite places are usually those that meet a few simple conditions: they are easy to find, affordable, allow groups to spend time together and do not impose a rigid schedule. That is why parks, malls, Calea Victoriei, cafés, cinemas and free events are among the most common choices.
For parents, this stage can come with emotions, but also with the opportunity to set clear rules: the time the teenager returns home, the area they are going to, the group they are going out with and the means of transport. For teenagers, however, these outings are a natural part of the summer holiday and of the way they discover the city.
Bucharest is not a perfect city for teenagers, but it offers enough spaces where young people can socialize, express themselves and create their own routes. From the city’s large parks to the events on Calea Victoriei and the activities organized by institutions dedicated to young people, summer in the Capital becomes a period when the city is experienced differently: more freely, more relaxed and closer to the rhythm of the new generation.
