The May 1st long weekend brings the same question for many Bucharest residents: where can you go for a barbecue without traveling too far from the city? Fortunately, there are several green areas around the capital that can be reached in under an hour, ideal for relaxing, picnicking, and spending time outdoors.
These spots are popular because they strike a balance between nature and accessibility. They don’t require long drives or high costs, but still offer enough space for a full day with friends or family.
Băneasa Forest, the quickest escape in the north of the city
Băneasa Forest is one of the most accessible options, located right on the edge of Bucharest. It is ideal for those who don’t want to spend much time on the road.
The area offers spaces for picnics and walks, but barbecues are only allowed in designated zones. It’s a common choice for spontaneous outings.
How to get there:
- By car: from the city center via DN1 (Bucharest–Ploiești Road) or Aerogării Boulevard – about 15–25 minutes depending on traffic
- Public transport: STB buses (e.g. 131, 335) to the Băneasa area, followed by a short walk
- Ride-sharing: approx. 15–30 RON from central areas
Cernica Forest, nature and quiet close to Bucharest

Important rules for barbecues in nature
To avoid issues, it’s important to follow current regulations. According to Romanian legislation on fire prevention and environmental protection, open fires are only allowed in specially designated areas.
Also:
- do not leave waste behind
- avoid lighting fires outside designated zones
- follow local authority guidelines
Failure to comply may result in fines and can endanger the environment.
How to choose the right place for May 1st
For a quick decision, consider:
- Distance: how long you want to travel
- Crowd level: popular spots get very busy
- Facilities: some places are equipped, others more natural
- Type of experience: relaxation or activity
