The General Mayor of Bucharest, Stelian Bujduveanu, announced on Thursday that restoration works on the alleys in Herăstrău Park have begun, with an urgent priority being the alley between the Rowing Club and the Fishermen’s Area, which is severely affected by the collapse of the bank and faces a real risk of crumbling. “After years of delays, the problems can no longer be ignored,” the mayor said.
“The alley between the Rowing Club and the Fishermen’s Area is badly damaged and presents a real risk of collapse. Today we began safety works, an immediate, necessary intervention long awaited by all visitors of the park,” announced Stelian Bujduveanu, who was in Herăstrău on Thursday together with city manager Lucian Judele.
According to the General Mayor, the first interventions have already been carried out to secure a section of the alley where the lake bank has collapsed due to erosion and weather conditions.
“This urgent work will last about a week and is necessary so that Bucharest residents can walk safely. In two weeks we will begin asphalting the main alleys. At the same time, we continue the procedures to obtain the necessary authorization for the large-scale bank consolidation project. We estimate that starting in October we will be able to launch this complex project. As part of it, we will also modernize the lighting system so that Herăstrău will be a safe and welcoming park in the evening as well,” explained Stelian Bujduveanu.
“Herăstrău is the largest park in the capital and a source of pride for Bucharest. After years of degradation, we are putting things back in order one by one: repairs, cleaning, sanitation, consolidation, and modernization. We ask Bucharest residents for understanding regarding the temporary traffic restrictions in the area, where alternative routes are already marked. The benefit will be significant for the whole community, and by 2026 we want the alleys and banks of Herăstrău to look as the people of Bucharest deserve. We are solving urgent issues and continuing to take care of the capital,” Bujduveanu added.
City manager Lucian Judele explained that the alleys in Herăstrău Park are nearly 100 years old, and over time, due to tree roots and weather phenomena, their structure has deteriorated, the most serious problem being the collapse of the bank.
“We accelerated the procedures and obtained authorization for safety works on the affected alley over a length of about 25–30 meters. (...) The rehabilitation works will take place in two stages: the first stage from October 2025 to April 2026, and the second stage starting in autumn 2026. Our goal is that in 2026, Herăstrău Park will look like the parks of European capitals,” Judele added.
The city manager also announced that all clearances have been issued for the removal of completely dried trees in the capital, and that currently there are no pending cases.
“Thus, we can intervene promptly wherever needed for the safety of citizens,” concluded Lucian Judele.
