The garden of the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History in Bucharest is now home to live tropical butterflies, displayed in a specially arranged space — the greenhouse located in the museum's courtyard.

Visitors are invited to step into a delicate world inhabited by spectacular, fragile creatures: tropical butterflies flying freely around them.

Inside the greenhouse, you’ll see species such as the lacewing butterfly (Cethosia biblis), the malachite butterfly (Siproeta stelenes), the blue morpho (Morpho peleides), the emerald swallowtail (Papilio palinurus), and a member of the striking owl butterfly group (Caligo sp.).

The public has a rare opportunity to witness the miracle of metamorphosis — the moment a butterfly opens its wings for the first time as it emerges from its chrysalis to begin a new stage of life.

None of the species on display are endangered. The chrysalises come exclusively from specialized butterfly farms and are not collected from the wild. The “butterfly nursery” — the emergence room — recreates the temperature and humidity conditions of tropical habitats.

Tickets & Schedule

Ticket prices: 28 lei for adults, 14 lei for seniors, and 7 lei for pupils and students. Tickets can be purchased at the museum’s front desk or online at: https://antipa.bilet.ro/

The live exotic butterflies can be visited Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:30 PM).

The greenhouse is accessible to visitors with special needs.
