Make the Most of May: Things to Do with Your Kid After Kindergarten in Bucharest

May brings a kind of breathing room that other months don't quite manage: good light until 8:30 PM, warmth without the summer heat, and afternoons worth lingering in. Your child walks out of kindergarten at 5:00 PM and you still have three hours before dark — enough time for something real, not just the drive home and half an hour of screen time. Here are six things you can actually do, with addresses, prices and everything you need to make it happen.

1. The Ferry on Herăstrău Lake — ~45 minutes, easy on the budget

The simplest thing that feels genuinely special for any child under six: head to the Central Pier at Parcul Regele Mihai I (near Berăria H), buy tickets at the booth, and get on the water.

Prices: adults 18 RON/ride, children 7–14 years 12 RON, children under 7 — free. Operating hours in May: daily 10:00–20:00. Each ride lasts about 25 minutes. Departures follow a fixed schedule — check at the booth for the next one.

Alternatively, rent a rowing boat (3–4 seats) or a pedal boat — both 12 RON/hour. Your child sits next to you, you paddle, everyone's happy. Works especially well for kids aged 3–7 who struggle to sit still anywhere else.

2. Climbing — Hype Arena by Kiddo, Romexpo

📍 Bulevardul Mărăști 65–67, Pavilion C1, near the Cupola

The venue has climbing walls with a harness (Vertical Thrills zone), a suspended adventure course (Urban Jungle) and interactive trampolines (Defy Gravity). Access works on a token system: a pack of 100 tokens costs around 90 RON and covers 2–3 hours of activities.

Worth noting: the climbing wall and suspended course require a minimum height of 130 cm — suitable for kids 6 and up. For younger children, check in advance which zones are accessible.

The weekday afternoon advantage: far less crowded, and attraction prices run about 20% cheaper than on weekends.

3. Bike rentals — I'Velo in Herăstrău or Tineretului

The I'Velo centers at Parcul Herăstrău (Charles de Gaulle entrance) and Parcul Tineretului (Șincai entrance) are open from spring through November.

Hours: Monday–Friday 11:00–19:30, weekends 12:00–20:00.

Rent a bike for yourself and, if your child is small, a mounted child seat — one hour pedaling along the Herăstrău paths makes for a complete afternoon. Prices vary by model; up-to-date details at ivelo.ro.

If your child already rides independently, the paths at Herăstrău or IOR are ideal — flat, wide, and car-free.

4. Orășelul Copiilor (Children's Town) — Parcul Tineretului

Orășelul Copiilor has a carousel, a small train, a panoramic wheel and inflatable slides — a step above the standard neighborhood playground. It's a destination, not just a backdrop.

Pair it with a bike rental (the I'Velo center is right there) or an ice cream on the way out and you've easily filled two hours without any stress.

5. The Botanical Garden — at its best in May

📍 Șoseaua Cotroceni nr. 32

May is when the Bucharest Botanical Garden peaks — flowers everywhere, dense greenery, tropical greenhouse. Not a high-energy outing, but for a curious 4–6 year old who wants to touch everything in sight, it works surprisingly well.

Hours: daily; check the official website for the current schedule. Admission is low. Round it off with a walk through the Cotroceni neighborhood — quiet streets, beautiful architecture, a good wind-down.

6. Climb Again — climbing with a purpose, Șoseaua Berceni

📍 Șoseaua Berceni, Bucharest

This NGO-run climbing and adventure center has climbing panels, an indoor adventure park and a zip line. The difference from Hype Arena: smaller, more personal atmosphere, with instructors alongside the kids throughout.

Sessions for children require advance booking — details on program and pricing at climbagain.ro. All proceeds fund climbing therapy programs for children with disabilities, so your money goes somewhere meaningful.

A few practical notes

The ferry runs daily, including weekdays. Pick up your child at 5:00 PM, arrive at Herăstrău around 5:30–6:00 PM and you'll easily catch a ride before the 8:00 PM closing time.

Hype Arena is quieter Monday–Friday until 4:00 PM; after that it fills up with school-age kids. If your afternoon is short, go straight from kindergarten pickup — don't delay.

I'Velo bikes are first-come, first-served — no reservation needed. If Herăstrău is out of bikes, there's another center at IOR–Titan.

Climb Again requires advance booking for sessions with young children.
