Located in the northern part of Bucharest, Băneasa Zoo is where nature and education meet, offering visitors, young and old, a unique and memorable experience. Founded more than 6 decades ago, Băneasa Zoo has developed over the years, becoming one of the most important and visited zoological parks in Romania.

Băneasa Zoo - History and evolution

The Băneasa Zoo was officially opened on May 1, 1955, at the decision of the People's Council of the Capital, initially with the aim of providing a recreational space and to educate the public about biodiversity and animal conservation. For the first four years after its opening (1955-1959), it functioned as a service of the Municipal Animal Husbandry Section, and the animals that populated it were none other than those concentrated in the parks of Cișmigiu, Herăstrău, Carol I and Băneasa Forest.

However, the garden opened its doors to the general public on May 1, 1959, Labor Day, and it functioned as such until 1962, when it was transformed into an institution and given the title "Gradina Zoologica București". The same year it was also included in the International Zoo Yearbook, published by the Zoological Society of London.

Over the decades, the garden has undergone numerous transformations and modernizations, adapting to international standards and improving the living conditions of the animals.

Zoo Băneasa - Species diversity

Băneasa Zoo occupies a total area of 5.85 hectares and is home to over 150 animal species, representing a wide range of habitats and regions of the world. Visitors can see everything from exotic animals such as lions, tigers, jaguars, alpacas to native species such as wolves, bears and various species of birds of prey. Each species is housed in specially designed enclosures that mimic their natural habitat as closely as possible, ensuring the animals' well-being.
Băneasa Zoo - Education and conservation programs

Băneasa Zoo is not only a place to visit, but also an important education and conservation center. Through various educational programs and interactive activities, the garden promotes awareness of the importance of protecting biodiversity. Schools and organized groups are encouraged to participate in guided tours and workshops where they can learn about animal behavior, ecosystems and conservation efforts.
