Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy (UMF) in Bucharest is changing the way students pay their annual tuition fees. Vice-Rector Valentina Uivarosi explains what the changes involve and why they were made.

“One of the measures we believe was beneficial at the university level was the fact that, starting last year, we slightly changed the way studies are funded. Until last year, we had a highly competitive system in which students were ranked each year based on their weighted average, and state-funded (budget) spots were allocated annually based on those rankings — essentially a yearly reclassification. Beginning last year, we eliminated that system. Now, a student who enters on a budgeted spot and passes all their exams (i.e., has no academic debts) keeps their state-funded place. A tuition-paying student can only move to a budgeted spot if one becomes available that year or if they retake and pass the admission exam,” said Valentina Uivarosi, Vice-Rector at UMF “Carol Davila” Bucharest, on Monday evening during an appearance on Medika TV.

The university representative also explained the reasons behind these changes.

“We made this change because the system was extremely competitive, students were under a lot of stress, and the relationships between them weren’t great... everyone had their own interest, they didn’t communicate well, and they were always focused only on grades and staying on a budgeted spot. We believe that by removing such intense and stressful competition, students can collaborate better and enjoy a more pleasant learning environment. It’s already difficult enough, there’s already a huge amount to study — and in medicine, you simply can’t afford to scrape by with minimal grades. In healthcare professions, you either learn or you don’t. So students will still prepare seriously; they are very good students, and we believe this was a positive change,” added Valentina Uivarosi.
