Folk artisans and visual artists will showcase handmade mărțișor creations at the “Dimitrie Gusti” National Village Museum, during the Mărțișor Fair taking place from February 23 to March 8. The event is hosted at the museum’s headquarters on 28–30 Kiseleff Road.
Visitors will be able to explore a wide range of mărțișor designs, from the simple red-and-white string, sometimes accompanied by a small charm, to more intricate handcrafted pieces. Traditionally worn on the chest or wrist and later tied to the branches of a blossoming tree, the mărțișor remains one of the most popular Romanian customs, offered to both girls and boys as a symbol of the arrival of spring.
The tradition of Mărțișor has deep historical roots. Its inclusion on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, through a joint effort by Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia, highlights the cultural value of this practice, which is linked to ancient agrarian beliefs about renewal and the cyclical rebirth of time.
The fair will be open daily, Monday through Sunday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Access is granted based on the standard museum entrance ticket.
