The 6th edition of the “George Enescu Festival Square” begins – Five days of free classical music concerts

George Enescu Square will once again be transformed into a space dedicated to classical music with the opening of a new edition of the “Festival Square,” taking place between September 17 and 21.

For five evenings, the stage in George Enescu Square will host over one hundred renowned artists and prestigious orchestras, including: Alexandru Tomescu, Matei Ioachimescu, Damian Drăghici, Horia Mihail, the Camerata Regală orchestra conducted by Constantin Grigore, the “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra of Bucharest conducted by maestro Tiberiu Soare, Opereta Stars, the Radio Romania Big Band conducted by Simona Strungaru, as well as scholarship holders from the Young Talents program supported by the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation.

The first evening will start at 6:00 PM with a special recital by the Young Talents scholars of the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation, performing works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, George Enescu, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Darius Milhaud, and Pedro Iturralde. Performers include Rafael Butaru (violin), Teodor Păun (oboe), Hemansi Singh (piano), Mariia Velia (flute), Claudiu Şuţu (saxophone), Fabiani Prcsina (piano), Bianca Zaboloteanu (clarinet), Matei Adam (clarinet), and Ionuţ Tănăsescu (bassoon).

At 7:00 PM, the musical project “Origins” will bring to the stage a spectacular blend of rock, jazz, and contemporary classical music, in a unique formula: Matei Ioachimescu (flute), Irina Rădulescu (marimba), Răzvan Florescu (vibraphone), and Philip Goron (drums). The program features reinterpretations of legendary pieces by Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, and Guns N’ Roses.

At 8:00 PM, violinist Alexandru Tomescu — performing on the Stradivarius Elder Voicu (1702) — together with guitarist Dragoş Ilie will present the concert “Rhapsodies,” a tribute to George Enescu, marking 70 years since his passing. The program will feature unique transcriptions for violin and classical guitar of Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsodies Op. 11 and Gershwin’s celebrated “Rhapsody in Blue.”

On September 18, the Festival Square will once again host concerts showcasing the diversity and emotional depth of classical music. At 6:00 PM, Young Talents scholars will interpret works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bach, Enescu, Milhaud, and Pedro Iturralde. At 7:00 PM, Damian Drăghici (pan flute, vocals) and Sorin Romanescu (guitar) will present “The Atlas of Emotions,” a sonic journey through human feelings. The evening will conclude at 8:00 PM with “Travelling Piano – 15 – Passion,” pianist Horia Mihail’s anniversary tour recital featuring selections from his most beloved repertoire.

On September 19, an evening dedicated to film music will begin at 7:00 PM with a special concert by the Camerata Regală conducted by Constantin Grigore. The audience will enjoy suites and arrangements of famous works by Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer, and other renowned composers, blending cinematic emotion with orchestral refinement.

On September 20, starting at 7:00 PM, the “George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra of Bucharest, conducted by maestro Tiberiu Soare, will perform with soloists Veronica Anuşca and George Vîrban. The repertoire will include opera arias, waltzes, and celebrated works by Johann Strauss II, Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet, Franz Lehár, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Gioachino Rossini, and many others.

The 6th edition of the Festival Square will conclude on Sunday, September 21, with two outstanding events: at 6:00 PM, the Opereta Stars recital featuring soloists Valentino Tiron, Gabriela Daha, and Andreea Dobia on piano; followed at 7:00 PM by “The Magic of Funk,” performed by the prestigious Radio Romania Big Band under the baton of conductor Simona Strungaru, joined by renowned musician Berti Barbera and bassist Adrian Ciuplea.

Throughout the entire event, visitors can also discover the exhibition “Interests and passions of the Royal Family members over time”, which brings together 14 works created by young visual artists — scholarship holders of the Young Talents program of the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation.
