The Bucharest National Airports Company (CNAB) has opened the public tender for the modernization of Runway 1 at Henri Coandă International Airport. The contract is estimated at around €106 million, with a maximum execution period of 16 months. It is the most significant investment project in the airport’s history. Works will be carried out in stages to maintain airport operations and allow military aircraft access from the 90th Air Transport Base.
“CNAB has launched the public tender for the modernization of Runway 1 at Henri Coandă Airport. This major project marks a decisive step in upgrading Romania’s aviation infrastructure, representing the most important investment in the airport’s history. Through this project, CNAB continues the modernization and expansion of the airport’s operational capacity, bringing its infrastructure in line with the strictest international aviation standards,” the company announced.
The project includes: full reconstruction and modernization of Runway 08R–26L; construction of five new taxiways; modernization of two existing taxiways; complete replacement of runway and taxiway lighting systems; upgrades to the underground cabling networks that power the lighting; reconfiguration of the runway safety area; relocation of the perimeter road; and construction of jet blast pads at both runway ends to protect embankments from engine thrust during takeoff.
“For operational and technical reasons, the works will be carried out in phases to ensure continuous airport operations and maintain military aircraft access from the 90th Air Transport Base,” the company added.
The contract is estimated at around €106 million. Works must be completed in a maximum of 16 months, with a 9-month design phase and a minimum warranty of five years from completion. The deadline for submitting bids is December 18, 2025.
The last major modernization of Runway 1 took place 31 years ago, in 1994. To maintain safe air traffic operations, the runway underwent repair works in 2017 during the previous term of CNAB’s current general director, Bogdan Mîndrescu.
