Health Minister announces construction of new oncology and radiotherapy center at "Bagdasar-Arseni" Hospital, a €100 million state-funded investment
The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, has announced the beginning of construction on a state-of-the-art oncology and radiotherapy center at the “Bagdasar-Arseni” Clinical Emergency Hospital in Bucharest. The project is valued at €100 million and is financed through the state budget. The execution deadline is three years.
“I've been familiar with this project for a long time — it began in 2022. We finally have all the necessary permits, and today, the demolition of the building behind me begins, followed by the construction of what could become the most advanced oncology and radiotherapy center in Romania. It will not only address neurochirurgical cerebrovascular pathologies, but a much broader spectrum of oncological conditions. The project is state-funded through the Ministry of Health and is worth approximately €100 million. The execution term is three years,” said Minister Alexandru Rogobete during a press conference held Thursday at “Bagdasar-Arseni” Hospital.
The hospital’s manager, Andi Nodiț, stated that over 1,200 days have passed since the project was first put on paper.
“Today marks 1,267 days since this project — which is about to begin physically — was first conceived on paper. That’s how long it took to go from the expression of intent, through all the procedural steps, to finally securing funding and all the necessary permits. I want to thank everyone who supported this project. It may seem like a long timeline — and it certainly is, depending on what we compare it with, maybe with other countries — but today we’ve finally reached the point of beginning actual construction and moving beyond the stage of paperwork and permits,” Nodiț emphasized.
Additionally, Dr. Florin Bica, spokesperson for “Bagdasar-Arseni” Hospital, provided some technical details about the project.
“Twenty years ago, I was at this hospital when the Center of Excellence in Neurosurgery was opened, featuring a Gamma Knife — the only one in Southeast Europe at the time. Today, we are taking another step forward, once again being the only ones in Southeast Europe to have this new stereotactic radiosurgery installation, which Dr. Fery Stoica will describe shortly. This is a major investment — the building will have a footprint of approximately 2,000 square meters and a total built area of 10,000 square meters. With an investment exceeding €100 million, it will greatly elevate the hospital's standard of care. Additionally, the hospital’s recovery ward will be relocated to this building, ensuring much better care for patients with neuromotor deficits. This will lead to better outcomes for both patients and the hospital, and allow us to expand or introduce new specialties, ultimately providing much more competent and high-quality medical services for our patients,” said Dr. Florin Bica.
Dr. Fery Stoica also explained what this new center will bring in terms of innovation.
“We have long awaited this investment and the realization of this project. Twenty years ago, when we began working in the high-energy Gamma Knife therapy lab, we were only able to treat brain pathologies. Now, with the installation of this CyberKnife system, we will be able to treat both malignant and benign conditions not only of the brain but also the spinal cord and other organs. This equipment is fully robotic, and the X-rays it emits are continuously monitored by a CT-type system, which allows us to treat tumors even in mobile organs such as the lungs and prostate. This means we will be able to offer curative-intent radiosurgical treatment for all lesions that are indicated for this type of pathology,” Dr. Fery Stoica explained.
