The storm that hit the Bucharest-Ilfov region last week has so far resulted in the opening of over 500 insurance claims, according to the National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Romania (UNSAR).
“The storm that affected the Bucharest-Ilfov area last week has led to the opening of more than 500 damage claims so far. These have been reported under property, goods, and CASCO (vehicle) policies, as they involved significant damages,” UNSAR reports.
Of the total claims filed:
- 58% concern damage to homes
- 21% relate to business premises and equipment
- A similar share (21%) covers insured vehicles damaged by the storm and torrential rain
At the end of last year, only around 29% of homes in the Bucharest-Ilfov region had voluntary home insurance, highlighting not only the importance of raising public awareness about the financial impact of such events, but also the existing protection gap.
The highest compensation paid by a UNSAR member company for storm-related damages under a voluntary home insurance policy was approximately 400,000 lei, illustrating both the severity of recent weather phenomena and the essential role of insurance.
“The increasing frequency of severe weather events in recent times is directly reflected in the number of damage claims reported to insurers. The compensation paid under home, CASCO, and commercial property policies confirms the role and capacity of the insurance industry to support clients in high-risk situations,” said Alexandru Ciuncan, President and CEO of UNSAR.
In this context, UNSAR representatives urge all property owners and businesses to review and update their insurance policies, in order to ensure proper financial protection not only against extreme weather but also other unforeseen events.
“Having insurance tailored to real needs can make the difference between continuity and collapse—whether personal or business-related. The growing occurrence of extreme weather events calls for preparation and adequate insurance coverage. Insurance offers fast, concrete support in critical situations, and expanding coverage for homes and properties is a priority for protecting families and businesses in Bucharest-Ilfov and beyond,” emphasized Alina Bărbulescu, property & goods insurance specialist at UNSAR.
Founded in 1994, UNSAR – the National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies of Romania represents 21 specialized companies, which together hold over 90% of the local insurance market. UNSAR’s mission is to protect and represent the interests of insurers and reinsurers in Romania, to contribute to the improvement of the legislative framework, and to promote the development of a sustainable insurance industry both domestically and internationally. Since 2007, UNSAR has been a full member of Insurance Europe, the European federation of insurers and reinsurers.
Currently, insurers in Romania pay out approximately €6.5 million in claims every calendar day.
