Meteorologists are forecasting high temperatures and increased thermal discomfort across several regions of Romania this week. On Wednesday, four counties will experience unusually hot weather, while on Thursday, half the country — including the capital, Bucharest — will be under a yellow heat alert, with maximum temperatures expected to reach up to 36°C.

According to the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), Wednesday’s warning applies between 12:00 and 21:00, covering the western and southern parts of Oltenia as well as southwestern Muntenia.

“Temperatures will be significantly higher than normal for this time of year (peaking between 33°C and 35°C), with high thermal discomfort,” ANM said.

“The temperature-humidity index (THI) is expected to reach around the critical threshold of 80 units.”

On Thursday, the alert extends to a much larger area, covering Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, southern Crișana, southwestern Transylvania, and continental Dobrogea, as well as Bucharest. The same time window — from noon to 9 PM — remains in effect.

“Temperatures will again exceed seasonal averages, with highs between 32°C and 36°C,” ANM noted.
“In Oltenia and Muntenia, thermal discomfort will be particularly intense, with local heatwave conditions and THI values slightly exceeding the critical threshold of 80 units.”

Authorities are advising people to avoid prolonged sun exposure, stay hydrated and take extra precautions for children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions.
