Police officers from the Economic Crime Investigation Service in Bucharest’s Sector 2 are conducting an investigation into the sale of spoiled food products, following the hospitalization of several children and a teacher from a kindergarten in the same sector, who were taken to multiple hospitals on Tuesday afternoon with symptoms of suspected food poisoning.
According to a statement from the Bucharest Police, an economic and sanitary inspection at both the kindergarten and the catering company resulted in fines totaling 117,000 lei, and authorities ordered the closure of both the kindergarten and the company for up to six months.
On Tuesday, June 24, around 4:30 PM, officers from Police Precinct 8 were alerted via emergency call 112 that several children at a kindergarten in Sector 2 were experiencing symptoms of illness.
Initial investigations revealed that around 1:00 PM, the children had lunch provided by a nearby restaurant under a catering service contract with the kindergarten.
Emergency response teams from SMURD arrived at the location to administer first aid, and several individuals were transported to six different medical facilities for further evaluation.
Later, 13 children (average age: 4 years) and one teacher were kept under medical observation with a preliminary diagnosis of “suspected food poisoning,” until their condition stabilized.
Police officers from the Sector 2 Economic Crime Investigation Service, together with representatives from the National Consumer Protection Authority and the Public Health Directorate, confirmed that the lunch had been delivered by a private catering company.
Following the inspections, both the kindergarten and the company received administrative penalties, and authorities ordered their temporary shutdown for up to six months.
At the company’s location, inspectors found and seized 45 kilograms of meat and fish that were improperly stored and unfit for human consumption.
The investigation is ongoing and the competent prosecutor’s office is expected to be notified. Authorities are pursuing the case under the charge of selling spoiled food products, a criminal offense under Romanian law.
