Firefighters intervened on Tuesday, until 9:00 p.m., in seven counties and in Bucharest due to severe weather conditions, pumping water out of basements and yards and removing fallen trees. No victims were reported.
“Following the occurrence of hydrometeorological phenomena, effects were recorded in seven localities across seven counties (Brăila, Caraș-Severin, Constanța, Galați, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Ialomița) and in the municipality of Bucharest, where firefighters intervened to remove water from one basement and one yard, to clear construction debris from a building, and to remove 14 fallen trees and one electricity pole. Eight vehicles were damaged,” the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) announced Tuesday evening in a press release.
Due to strong winds, port operations were suspended in Midia Port, Constanța County.
“Significant effects were recorded in Caraș-Severin County, where, on national road DN 6, several rocks detached from the slopes and hit a moving car, without resulting in casualties. Road traffic was restricted to a single lane,” the same source stated.
To alert the population in areas affected by the red code warning, five RO-Alert messages were issued in the context of ongoing hydrometeorological warnings.
Starting at 9:00 p.m., the Red Code and Orange Code warnings issued by meteorologists and hydrologists came into effect.
According to specialists from the National Meteorological Administration, the Red Code forecasts torrential and heavy rainfall (valid until tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.), while the Orange Code indicates significant rainfall (valid until tomorrow, October 8, at 11:00 p.m.).
Additionally, due to the forecasted amount of precipitation, hydrologists warn of possible major runoff on slopes, torrents and streams, rapid flash floods on small rivers—with potential local flooding—and rising water levels and flows in some river basins, possibly exceeding defense thresholds.
