The largest mall in the capital, AFI Palace Cotroceni, is being evacuated on Saturday due to a fire. Initial reports indicate that the fire broke out on the flat rooftop of the shopping center and is manifesting with open flames and large amounts of smoke.

UPDATE – ISU Bucharest-Ilfov reports, at the time of this news release, that smoke can be seen inside several cinema halls within the mall. Firefighters are operating with an intervention team from inside.

The smoke emissions at rooftop level have decreased significantly, and rescue teams are working to locate the fire and ventilate the smoke from inside the mall.

Law enforcement has set up a traffic control system to ease the exit of vehicles from the mall's parking lot.

INITIAL REPORT – “We are intervening to extinguish a fire that broke out on the rooftop of the AFI Palace Cotroceni mall, located on Timișoara Boulevard, Sector 6, Bucharest. When the first fire crews arrived, the fire was already manifesting with open flames and large smoke emissions at the flat roof level,” announced ISU Bucharest-Ilfov.

The fire is affecting the roof, above a technical floor, in the central area of the mall.

At the time of this report, people inside the shopping center are being evacuated.

The cited source states that for now, there is no information regarding any potential victims.

At the scene, 10 fire engines, 2 aerial intervention and rescue vehicles, the Special Rescue Detachment, one nitrogen-based extinguishing vehicle, and 5 SMURD emergency crews are responding.

Firefighters are acting inside with search and rescue teams, while an external intervention unit has also been set up around the building.
