Bucharest’s interim mayor, Stelian Bujduveanu, announced that the City Hall is adding another 12.95 kilometers of main heating pipes to the modernization program for the city’s district heating system, financed through non-reimbursable funds.
According to the mayor, the works aim to ensure optimal heating supply for residents in areas such as Calea Vitan, Mihai Bravu Road, Pantelimon Road, Iancului Road, Chișinău Boulevard, and Piața Muncii.
Interim mayor Stelian Bujduveanu stated that the General City Hall of Bucharest has included an additional 12.95 kilometers of main pipelines in its district heating modernization program, financed through EU and national non-reimbursable funds.
“We have prepared new projects to rehabilitate the capital's heating network, with 85% of the funding coming from the Ministry of Development through the District Heating Program. The General Council of Bucharest has approved the necessary documentation, which will soon be submitted to the ministry for funding approval,” Bujduveanu announced on Thursday.
According to the interim mayor, the planned works will improve the heating system’s performance for residents in areas including Calea Vitan, Mihai Bravu Road, Pantelimon Road, Iancului Road, Chișinău Boulevard, and Piața Muncii.
The works have been divided into four segments:
- Magistrala III Sud – 2.546 km
- Magistrala I Sud – 4.970 km
- Magistrala I Sud – CM11 – CI3 – 5.099 km
- Magistrala I – III Vest – 0.335 km
Bujduveanu explained that the investment is intended to reduce breakdowns and thermal losses in the network, cut electricity and water consumption, improve energy efficiency, extend the lifespan of the infrastructure, and enhance service quality for end users.
“This project directly contributes to reducing pollution and operational costs, and is part of the broader strategy to modernize Bucharest’s centralized heating system (SACET),” Bujduveanu added.
The deteriorating condition of Bucharest’s current district heating system—especially the aging main pipelines, some of which are nearly 50 years old—remains a widely debated issue among both politicians and civil society.
The replacement of these main pipes was initiated by current president Nicuşor Dan during his tenure as general mayor. However, the initiative sparked frustration among some Bucharest residents connected to the centralized heating system, who experienced temporary disruptions in hot water and heating during certain phases of the works.
