Apa Nova is launching the campaign "The official water from everything you love in Bucharest," an initiative that puts the spotlight on the quality of tap water and its role in city life. The project has a strong educational and awareness component, aiming to encourage Bucharest residents to rediscover the value of a local, safe, and sustainable resource—but most importantly, to trust the quality of tap water.
From cooling stations installed in central areas of the capital, to the activation of 113 public fountains managed by Apa Nova across the city—marked with QR codes linking directly to drinking water analysis reports—through involvement in events relevant to the Bucharest community and cooperation with the hospitality industry to promote tap water consumption, every element of the campaign contributes to reconnecting Bucharest residents with their city and the water they consume.
“We often pass by fountains or turn on the cold water tap without thinking that behind this simple gesture lies years of expertise and hundreds of millions of euros invested, state-of-the-art technology, and care for public health. The water we supply is safe, rigorously tested, and monitored 24/7, but also present in every aspect of urban life. Through this campaign, we want tap water to be seen not only as a practical option but as a conscious, responsible choice and even a source of local pride—above all, a choice based on trust in its quality. It is a way to reconnect with the city, the environment, and sustainable values,” said Mr. Mădălin Mihailovici, General Director of Apa Nova Bucharest.
The potability of water from the public network is guaranteed through a complex, fully digitalized production and monitoring process. Apa Nova Bucharest supplies over 180 million cubic meters of potable water annually, continuously verified through a network of 55 fixed testing points. More than 6,000 laboratory analyses are performed each year, checking 130,000 quality parameters in accordance with national and European legislation. Supporting these efforts, Apa Nova has invested over 748 million euros in the last 25 years to modernize, expand, and digitize the public water supply system, which integrates a network of more than 2,200 km and serves over 2 million residents.
“The official water from everything you love in Bucharest” also includes an important information campaign in the HoReCa sector, conducted in partnership with HORA – the Employers’ Organization of Hotels and Restaurants in Romania – as a pilot program to promote and encourage tap water consumption in Bucharest’s restaurants and cafés. To support this initiative, Apa Nova offers free tap water quality testing for the first 100 establishments that join the campaign and request it. This initiative is based on legislation regulating the free access of restaurant customers to tap drinking water, namely Law 96/2024, and is inspired by practices already adopted in major European cities where the consumption of potable water from the public network is actively encouraged as a sustainable alternative.
Furthermore, to add comfort for Bucharest residents during heat waves, Apa Nova, in partnership with the Bucharest City Hall, has installed eight modern cooling systems that spray fine water mist in heavily trafficked city areas: Piața Unirii, Universitate (in front of the National Theatre), Str. Halelor (near the metro), entrance to Titan Park, Bucur Obor, Calea Victoriei (in front of the National Military Circle), Piața Rahova, and Calea Giulești. These cooling points operate daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM during the summer.
