The end of August brings two exceptional theatre productions to the stage of the National Theatre in Bucharest. On August 30 and 31, audiences are invited to rediscover the classic comedy “A Stormy Night”, directed by Vlad Zamfirescu, and to explore the complexities of family dynamics in the premiere of “Anti-Family Portrait”, a contemporary play written by Ștefan Iancu.

Directed by Vlad Zamfirescu, this new take on Caragiale’s classic brings to life the charm of old Romania, wrapped in a contemporary aesthetic and explosive humor. The play takes on new layers through the outstanding performances of a stellar cast: Maia Morgenstern, Marius Manole, Carmen Tănase, Vlad Zamfirescu, Mircea Rusu, Niculae Urs, and Gabriel Vatavu/Ștefan Radu.
In this reimagining, the kitchen becomes an agora, and themes like love, politics, and tradition intertwine in a delightful story about who we are and how we still recognize ourselves.

“Anti-Family Portrait” by Ștefan Iancu, directed by Alex Bogdan, premieres on the main stage of the National Theatre of Bucharest. The cast features Emilia Popescu, Marius Manole, Raluca Aprodu, Ștefan Iancu, Alin Florea, and Cătălina Mihai.
A bittersweet comedy with shades of Woody Allen and a Caragiale-style Romanian humor, the play takes us into the living room of a seemingly normal family, where everyone has a secret — and something to blame the others for. The most present absence is the father, around whom unfolds a story of unspoken truths, missed expectations, and family ties that no longer fit the picture. With irony, cynicism, and emotion, “Anti-Family Portrait” shows us how sometimes the past must be dismantled in order to rebuild the present.
