For both residents and visitors, getting to Henri Coandă International Airport (Otopeni) can sometimes be challenging, especially during peak traffic hours. Choosing the right route depends on several factors: where you start from, the time of day, your budget, and whether comfort or travel predictability matters most. There are several efficient options — public transport, train, taxi, or personal car — each with its advantages and limitations.

Generally, the most predictable option time-wise is the airport train, often combined with the metro. However, in some areas taxis or personal cars may still be the fastest solution, particularly at night or outside rush hours.

From central Bucharest

If you’re leaving from central areas such as Piața Victoriei, Piața Romană, Universitate, or Unirii, you have multiple transport choices.

The direct train from Gara de Nord (North Railway Station) to Otopeni Airport is one of the fastest options. You can reach Gara de Nord easily by metro or bus, and from there the train ride takes about 20–25 minutes. Many travelers prefer this option because it avoids unpredictable road traffic.

The airport express bus is another popular alternative. It departs from key central locations and goes directly to the departures terminal. However, travel time can vary significantly depending on traffic conditions.

Taxis and ridesharing services can be fast outside peak hours, but morning and late afternoon congestion can cause delays.

From northern Bucharest

Areas such as Băneasa, Aviatorilor, Pipera, or Herăstrău benefit from their proximity to the airport. Here, traveling by car or taxi is often the fastest option, sometimes taking under 20 minutes in normal traffic conditions.

Urban buses to the airport run frequently in this area and can be a convenient alternative. The airport train is also accessible if you can quickly reach Gara de Nord.

Still, traffic on DN1 can become heavily congested, especially during rush hours due to office traffic in Pipera.

From the south and east of the city

Residents of areas like Berceni, Titan, Dristor, or Pantelimon usually benefit most from combining the metro with the airport train.

The metro provides a fast and reliable connection to Gara de Nord or other central points. From there, the train significantly reduces the risk of delays caused by road traffic. Many travelers prefer this combination because it avoids crossing the city by car during busy hours.

Taxis or ridesharing offer comfort, but travel time can sometimes exceed an hour when traffic is heavy.

From western Bucharest

Neighborhoods such as Militari, Drumul Taberei, or Crângași have good metro access, making it easy to connect with Gara de Nord and the airport train.

The metro remains a stable option in terms of travel time, and the metro-train combination is often considered one of the most efficient routes from western Bucharest. Express buses can also be useful, but again, timing depends on traffic.

Driving may be quick outside peak hours, but morning and evening congestion can cause delays.

Choosing the best option for your situation

If predictability is your main concern, the airport train combined with the metro is often the safest choice. For comfort and direct transport, taxis or ridesharing services are commonly used, though it’s wise to allow extra time.

Surface public transport is affordable but most affected by traffic conditions. Driving your own car can be fast in certain time windows, but parking costs and congestion should be considered.

Regardless of your choice, checking traffic conditions before leaving and allowing sufficient time — especially for international flights — is strongly recommended. In Bucharest, the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one can often come down simply to the time you choose to depart.
