Located southeast of Bucharest, Văcărești Natural Park is the largest compact green space in the capital. Văcărești Natural Park - History and transformation of the area

Văcărești Park has a fascinating history. Originally, in the 1980s, the area was earmarked for a reservoir project. Landowners and homeowners were expropriated and the communist regime started a large-scale hydro-technical project here: Lake Văcărești. Unfortunately, however, the project was never completed. The lake was to be fed by gravity from Argeș, via Lake Mihăilești, over a distance of 27 km, with only 14 km of the adduction being realized. This solution was abandoned and the basin created was filled by pumping water from the Dâmbovița. 

Due to faulty workmanship, seepage caused flooding in the neighboring areas, especially the Popești-Leordeni greenhouses, which led to the temporary suspension and, after 1989, to the definitive abandonment of the project. In the absence of human intervention, nature took over, transforming the site into a complex ecosystem. 

After years of efforts by ecologists and environmental organizations, the area was declared a nature park in 2016, the first of its kind in a European capital.
