In Bucharest, a couples therapy session can cost anywhere from approximately RON 250 to more than RON 500, depending on the therapist and the length of the appointment. But price and proximity to home are not the only factors worth considering. Before booking a session, it is important to check whether the professional is licensed to practise psychotherapy, what training they have completed and how much experience they have working with couples.

The Romanian capital offers a wide range of options, from private practices and psychology clinics to online sessions and in-person appointments. This variety can make choosing a therapist difficult, particularly for couples who have never attended therapy before and may not even agree on why they should seek help.

Where to Find Couples Therapists in Bucharest

You can start by searching the websites of private practices, psychology clinics or platforms featuring professional therapist profiles. It is worth searching specifically for "couples psychotherapy" or "couples therapy in Bucharest", rather than simply "psychologist in Bucharest", as not all psychologists work with both partners in joint sessions.

An important reference point is the Romanian College of Psychologists, the professional body responsible for regulating the practice of psychology in Romania. Its professional register allows you to check a practitioner's credentials. The professional specialisation listed in their registration is more important than the promotional language used on a website.

For example, someone may be trained in clinical psychology without necessarily being accredited to practise psychotherapy. Similarly, a psychology degree or participation in personal development courses does not replace the professional authorisation required to provide regulated psychological services.

Bucharest also offers the advantage of choosing between in-person and online sessions. For a couple in which one partner works in Pipera while the other lives or works in the southern part of the city, accessibility can make a significant difference in maintaining regular appointments. However, the choice between online and in-person therapy should also reflect the couple's needs, rather than being based solely on avoiding traffic.

What Training Should a Couples Psychotherapist Have?

In Romania, psychotherapy is a regulated professional specialisation. Long-term psychotherapy training lasts at least three years and includes theoretical and practical training, personal therapeutic experience and professional supervision, in accordance with the standards of the Romanian College of Psychologists.

Psychotherapists may practise within different therapeutic approaches, including systemic, cognitive behavioural, integrative and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, among other recognised orientations. When working with couples, training and experience in understanding relationship dynamics, recurring conflicts, communication, intimacy and relational difficulties are particularly relevant.

There is no single therapeutic approach that works best for every couple. That is why it is useful to understand a therapist's specific training and experience in couples psychotherapy. A qualified professional should be able to explain their approach clearly, without promising to save the relationship or resolve every conflict within a fixed number of sessions.

It is also worth finding out whether the psychotherapist practises under professional supervision or independently. Both arrangements can be legitimate, provided the practitioner holds the appropriate professional authorisation. Being a supervised practitioner does not, in itself, mean that someone is unqualified to provide psychotherapy.

Psychological Counselling or Couples Psychotherapy? What Is the Difference?

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but in Romania, psychological counselling and psychotherapy are distinct professional specialisations, each with its own training and competency standards.

Psychological counselling may address emotional difficulties, adjustment to life changes, self-awareness and certain relationship problems, within the professional's area of competence. Psychotherapy involves interventions grounded in a particular therapeutic approach and may also focus on changing persistent psychological patterns and mechanisms.

For couples experiencing recurring arguments, emotional distance, intimacy difficulties or a crisis of trust, it is important to establish whether the professional has the appropriate training for the type of intervention they need. The name of the service alone is not enough; the practitioner's actual professional competencies matter.

How Much Does Couples Therapy Cost in Bucharest in 2026?

Fees vary considerably between practices. As a general indication, a couples therapy session in Bucharest may cost between RON 250 and RON 500, although some professionals charge more.

The price depends on several factors, including session length, the therapist's experience and the practice's pricing policy. Some sessions last 50–60 minutes, while others are scheduled for 75 or 90 minutes. Comparing two fees without considering the duration of the appointment can therefore be misleading.

At RON 350 per session, for example, four appointments in one month would cost a couple RON 1,400. However, session
