On National Culture Day, celebrated on 15 January, the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre invites the public to take part in a series of representative activities: stage performances, museum visits, guided tours, and light projections.
Starting at 7:00 p.m., two productions from the theatre’s current repertoire are scheduled.
“Moroi și păpădii”, written and directed by Gavril Pătru, marks the director’s debut. A well-known actor of the National Theatre, Pătru takes on this triple role—author, director, and performer—by staging, on the Sala Pictura stage, a dramatization of the text that earned him the “Marin Sorescu” Award for Best Debut Book of 2022, granted by the Bucharest Branch of the Writers’ Union.
At the Ion Caramitru Hall, audiences can see “Exil”, written and directed by Alexandra Badea. One of the most compelling and awarded voices of the younger generation of playwrights, Badea reconstructs—through a non-linear chronology—the story of a family spanning three generations. The production revisits, fragment by fragment, the experiences that shaped their lives: communism, post-communism, and, above all, exile.
Spectators attending this performance will also be able to watch, on a screen installed in the foyer of the Ion Caramitru Hall, a video montage featuring some of the most beautiful verses by Mihai Eminescu, interpreted by renowned actors of the National Theatre.
“I fell in love with the Romanian language through Eminescu’s poetry. He knew better than anyone that the worlds of poetry are the worlds of our dreams,” wrote Ion Caramitru, an exceptional interpreter of Eminescu’s verse, in his essay Copyright poetic.
At 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., free guided visits will take place at the TNB Museum. Access to the exhibition “Queen Maria at the Theatre” is available with a free ticket, which can be obtained online or at the box office, subject to availability.
From 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m., the theatre also offers free guided tours of the National Theatre, subject to availability. Visitors will be able to explore the new halls, workshops, and backstage areas. The meeting point is the foyer of the Ion Caramitru Hall, in front of the ticket office. The public is kindly asked to arrive 15 minutes before the selected tour time.
Beginning at 5:00 p.m., light projections featuring portraits of prominent figures of Romanian culture will be displayed on the TNB stage tower.
