Bucharest is heading into one of its busiest cultural weekends of the month. From Friday, 18 September, to Sunday, 20 September, the capital will mark 567 years since its first documented mention with concerts, video-mapping projections, guided tours and activities across the city.

At the same time, the newly redeveloped Lacul Morii Island will welcome visitors, while film and poetry festivals continue throughout the weekend. Major concerts are also scheduled at the Palace Hall, Arenele Romane, the Bucharest National Opera and the Romanian Athenaeum. Many events are free, although some tours, performances and screenings require advance registration or tickets.

The weekend at a glance

If you want to make a quick choice, Saturday evening brings the largest event of the weekend: iMapp Bucharest in Constitution Square, preceded by a Rudimental concert. On Sunday, the Bucharest Days programme in the same square will end with a WhoMadeWho DJ set.

Friday is packed with ticketed concerts. David Garrett performs at the Palace Hall, Cargo takes the stage at Arenele Romane, and the Bucharest National Opera presents “Sinfonia do Brasil”. The Bucharest International Film Festival also begins on Friday, while West Side Sunset Fest marks the opening of the newly redeveloped public space on Lacul Morii Island.

Bucharest Days brings the largest selection of free events

The city’s anniversary programme takes place on 19 and 20 September, with events in Constitution Square, along Calea Victoriei, at the Arch of Triumph, around the museums near Victory Square and inside Bucharest City Hall. Most activities are free, but registration is required for some of the guided tours.

On Saturday, access to Constitution Square begins at 16:00. Rudimental’s concert is scheduled for 20:00, while the international iMapp Bucharest – Winners League video-mapping competition starts at 21:30. Seven international artists and teams will project their works onto the Palace of Parliament, whose façade will become a screen covering approximately 23,000 square metres.

The evening will also include “NADIA – The Perfect 10”, a projection marking 50 years since Nadia Comăneci’s historic achievement at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Members of the public will be able to vote for the winning iMapp production.

On Sunday, the gates open at 12:00. Several music sets are scheduled throughout the afternoon, while WhoMadeWho will take the stage at 20:30. Admission is free on both days.

The Open Streets programme on Calea Victoriei includes theatre, circus performances, concerts, debates and guided tours. “Battle of the Beats”, an interactive project that turns sounds produced by the audience into music, will take place in front of the National Museum of Art of Romania from 19:30 on Saturday and from 19:00 on Sunday.

Bucharest City Hall can be visited during four free guided tours: from 16:00 to 17:00 and from 17:00 to 18:00 on Saturday, followed by tours from 12:00 to 13:00 and from 13:00 to 14:00 on Sunday. Advance registration is required, and places are limited.

A piano and violin recital will take place beneath the Arch of Triumph on Sunday from 16:00. Admission is free, and the monument itself will be open to visitors between 10:00 and 18:00. The complete schedule is available on the official ARCUB page for Bucharest Days.

Friday: David Garrett, Cargo and “Sinfonia do Brasil”

Several major concerts overlap on Friday evening, so you will need to choose in advance. David Garrett brings his “Millennium Symphony World Tour” to the Palace Hall, combining classical repertoire with rock, pop and film music. The concert starts at 20:00, and remaining tickets can be checked on the artist’s official Eventim page.

At Arenele Romane, Cargo will perform its “Te chem” concert. Doors open at 18:00, while the show is scheduled to begin at 19:00. The remaining tickets and admission categories are displayed on the official ticketing page.

Also on Friday, the Bucharest National Opera will host “Sinfonia do Brasil” from 18:30, featuring Mădălina Ioana Petre and the Bucharest National Opera Orchestra conducted by Daniel Jinga. The concert combines classical guitar, vocals and orchestral repertoire inspired by Brazilian music. Seat availability should be checked directly in the Bucharest National Opera calendar.

At the Romanian Athenaeum, pianist Nelson Goerner will give a recital from 19:00 as part of the George Enescu International Competition. The programme includes works by Bach, Schumann and Schubert. On Saturday, the Piano Final begins at 18:00, featuring the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Daniela Candillari. Garou performs at Arenele Romane on Sunday from 20:00. “The Best Of” brings together some of the artist’s best-known songs, including music associated with the “Notre-Dame de Paris” musical. Tickets can be checked on the official Eventim page.

“D’alles Bucureștilor de altădată”, scheduled for Sunday at Sala Dalles, is currently marked as sold out. Those interested can follow the official ticketing page in case returned seats become available.

Lacul Morii Island reopens with West Side Sunset Fest

West Side Sunset Fest takes place from 18 to 20 September and marks the public’s first opportunity to explore Lacul Morii Island after its redevelopment. The event begins at 10:00 on Friday and includes music, sports activities, children’s areas and places to relax by the water.

Organisers recommend travelling by public transport or bicycle. Traffic restrictions will apply in the area during the festival, with exceptions for local residents. Check the updated programme on the official West Side Events website before setting off, especially for activities that depend on the weather.

Boat trips along the Dâmbovița River are also included in the Bucharest Days programme, departing from the United Nations Pier. The trips are scheduled from 16:00 to 19:00 on Friday and from 14:00 to 19:00 on Saturday.

You should allow a separate part of the day for West Side Sunset Fest. Lacul Morii Island is some distance from the main events in the city centre, and travelling to Constitution Square or Calea Victoriei may take longer than usual during a busy weekend.

Films at BIFF and the Bucharest Feminist Film Festival

The 22nd Bucharest International Film Festival begins on Friday and continues until 27 September. Most of the weekend screenings are held at Apollo111, with a selection including arthouse films, documentaries and premieres.

The opening gala on Friday features “The Last Shelter”, starting at 19:00 and attended by director John Skoog, with a Q&A session after the screening. Saturday’s schedule includes “No Rest for the Wicked”, “Everytime” and “Aria”. On Sunday, audiences can watch “Cetatea Enisala – Supraviețuitoarea Dobrogei”, “I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning” and “Lenin’s Pawn”. Screening times, film descriptions and tickets are available in the official BIFF programme.

The Bucharest Feminist Film Festival continues until Sunday at Cinema Muzeul Țăranului, in the Horia Bernea Studio. This year’s edition is built around the theme of “Community” and includes international and Romanian films, short films and discussions with guests.

Because the two festivals overlap, check the venue carefully when planning your visit. BIFF screenings during this weekend are concentrated mainly at Apollo111, while BFFF events take place at Cinema Muzeul Țăranului. The second festival’s schedule is published on the official BFFF website.

Poetry, design and activities for children

The Bucharest International Poetry Festival ends on Sunday after a week of readings, debates, concerts and meetings with writers from approximately 30 countries. Events are held across several venues, including the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the Tudor Arghezi Memorial House, Instituto Cervantes and the French Institute.

The weekend programme also includes free activities for children. A comic-strip workshop for children aged 8 to 10 will be held on Saturday, together with an activity inspired by the character Apolodor for children aged 8 to 14. Weekend Sessions returns to the garden of the Filipescu-Cesianu House with an edition dedicated to Spanish culture. The programme includes music, DJ sets, children’s workshops, tours of the Museum of Ages and outdoor film screenings. Back to Dichisar takes place at Impact Hub Universitate, bringing together products made by Romanian designers and artisans, including clothing, jewellery, ceramics, accessories and homeware. The list of exhibitors and updated opening hours are available on the Dichisar website.

Anatolian Food Fest is being held in Titan Park. The festival is open from 17:00 to 21:00 on Friday and from 10:00 to 21:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free, and visitors will find Turkish dishes, desserts and cultural performances.

Historic vehicles, trains and depot tours

European Mobility Week brings a series of public transport events to Bucharest. Historic vehicles will be displayed at Basarab Railway Station, while guided tours are planned at the Giurgiului tram depot and bus garage.

At Bucharest North Railway Station, visitors will be able to see the Presidential Train, the Malaxa 780 railcar and several locomotives. The Royal Lounge and the CFR Museum will also be open. Track maintenance vehicles will be displayed at Bucharest West Railway Station, while urban train journeys are planned along the Bucharest North/Basarab–Bucharest West–Bucharest Progresul route.

Special bus routes will depart from King Michael I Park towards several attractions in Ilfov County, including Fort 13 Jilava, the Piscu School Museum and Workshop, Căldărușani Monastery, Pasărea Monastery, Snagov and the Brâncovenesc Palace. Registration is required for visits to depots, the Metrorex simulator and certain activities with limited capacity. Events at Basarab and Bucharest North stations are easier to combine on the same day because the two locations are directly connected by public transport.

BIFE-SIM for those interested in furniture and interior design

BIFE-SIM continues at Romexpo until Sunday. The trade fair is dedicated to furniture, interior design, machinery and solutions for the wood industry, but it may also be useful for visitors looking for ideas for their homes.

Opening hours are 10:00–18:00 on Friday and Saturday, and 10:00–16:00 on Sunday. A one-day ticket costs 20 lei, while children under seven can enter free of charge when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Admission information and tickets are available through the official Romexpo platform.

A visit can be combined with activities in King Michael I Park or the events taking place along Șoseaua Kiseleff. The nearby “Museum Triangle” programme involves the Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant and the National Geology Museum.

How to plan your weekend without wasting time on the road

For a day in central Bucharest, you can combine Calea Victoriei, the City Hall tours, the Filipescu-Cesianu House and the events in Constitution Square. On Saturday evening, allow enough time to enter the iMapp area, as the event is expected to attract a large audience.

The museums near Victory Square, the activities in King Michael I Park and Romexpo can form a second route. West Side Sunset Fest, Titan Park and Arenele Romane are in different parts of Bucharest and are best planned separately.
