Bucharest has restaurants, theatres, malls, parks, museums, terraces, events and enough places where you can spend a few hours without leaving the city. Still, for certain types of relaxation, the capital remains limited. No matter how large the city is, there are things that people in Bucharest increasingly look for in Ilfov or in nearby localities: large swimming pools, outdoor adventure spaces, farms for children, resort-style places and locations where you actually feel that you have stepped out of the urban rhythm.
This need says a lot about the way people live in the capital. Bucharest offers many services, but it does not always offer space, quiet and real contact with nature. That is why, at weekends, many families choose to go toward Balotești, Pantelimon, Greaca, Snagov, Cernica or other nearby areas. Not necessarily for a proper holiday, but for a few hours in which the city feels farther away.
Water, pools and resort-style relaxation
One of the things people in Bucharest most often look for outside the city is access to large pools, spa areas and relaxation experiences that do not feel like a simple visit to an urban swimming pool. Bucharest has pools, hotels with spa facilities and wellness centres, but few places can offer the size, greenery, parking and mini-holiday feeling that people look for at weekends.
The best-known example is Therme Bucharest, located in Balotești, north of the capital. The complex is open daily, and its official schedule mentions areas such as Galaxy, The Palm and Elysium, with opening hours extending until late in the evening. According to the official Therme Bucharest schedule, the Galaxy, The Palm and Elysium areas are open Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 23:00, Friday to Saturday from 09:00 to 00:00, and Sunday from 09:00 to 23:00.
For families, the Galaxy area is important because it is also designed for children, while adults are mostly drawn to the palm tree areas, saunas, thermal water pools and relaxation rituals. On the official Therme Bucharest prices page, the Galaxy area has separate prices for adults and children, confirming the family-oriented component of the complex.
Seasonal pools near the capital also fall into this category of water-based getaways. For example, Domeniul Greaca, located in Giurgiu County, presents itself as a resort with a swimming pool for adults and children, operating during the warm season. On the official page dedicated to the Domeniul Greaca swimming pool, it is stated that the pool operates only during the warm season, while the Domeniul Greaca contact page lists the pool reservation schedule as Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 19:00.
The fact that such places are in demand shows a real gap in Bucharest: the city has leisure areas, but not enough large, clean, green and well-organized spaces for family-friendly water relaxation. On hot days, many Bucharest residents prefer to leave the city precisely because they want more than a sunbed by a crowded pool between apartment blocks.
Outdoor adventure and large spaces for movement
The second thing people in Bucharest look for outside the city is outdoor adventure. The capital’s parks are useful for walks, light jogging, cycling or short outings with children, but they cannot replace the forest, tree trails, zip lines, horse riding, paintball or large spaces where children and adults can burn energy outdoors.
A clear example is Edenland Park, located in Balotești, at 12 Cantonului Street. On its official website, Edenland Park is presented as an adventure park in nature, located about 20 minutes from Bucharest, with activities for adults and children. The location includes tree trails, horse riding, a climbing wall, bicycle rental, paintball and other outdoor activities.
On the Edenland prices and activities page, the park states that activities are available daily, starting at 10:00 and lasting until sunset, while park access costs 25 lei per person, with free entry for children under 3. There is also a special children’s area, and the page dedicated to the Edenland playground mentions play structures, climbing areas, slides, swings, seesaws, trampolines and sand islands.
For Bucharest, such places work as an escape valve. The city has large parks, but few areas where nature, movement and adventure are designed as a complete experience. That is why families, groups of friends and even companies choose adventure parks nearby for weekends, days off or group events.
The need for this type of space becomes even more obvious in the case of children. In the city, playgrounds are often small, crowded or repetitive. Outside Bucharest, parents look for places where children can run, climb, see animals, ride bicycles or spend a few hours without constantly feeling surrounded by cars, concrete and narrow pavements.
Farms, animals and experiences for children
The third thing Bucharest residents look for around the capital is direct contact with animals and farm life. For children growing up in the city, meeting domestic animals, taking part in workshops about food, nature or agriculture and seeing what a farm looks like are experiences that are hard to find in densely built Bucharest.
A well-known example is Ferma Animalelor in Pantelimon. On its official website, Ferma Animalelor is presented as a place open to families, groups and children, with options for visits, parties and educational programmes. The Ferma Animalelor schedule page states that the location is open throughout the year, with information updated on March 1, 2026.
Pantelimon City Hall describes Ferma Animalelor as Romania’s first domestic animal farm-park designed especially for children, opened in 2009 near the city’s dairy farm. On the Pantelimon City Hall page about Ferma Animalelor, the schedule is listed as Monday to Sunday, from 09:00 to 17:30.
Such places are sought after because they offer an experience the city cannot easily reproduce. A child can see animals, better understand where food comes from, spend time outdoors and associate learning with play. For parents, it is an outing that is easier to organize than a long trip, but more interesting than a simple walk in the park.
The same category includes places around Bucharest that combine play, nature and education: farms, horse-riding centres, orchards, themed gardens or spaces where workshops for children are organized. The fact that these places have a steady audience shows that Bucharest residents are not only looking for entertainment, but also for simpler experiences, closer to nature and harder to find inside the city.
Why these things are not easy to find in Bucharest
Bucharest is a city with high density, heavy traffic and constant pressure on land. Large spaces are expensive, and many areas that could have become leisure spaces have been occupied by real estate developments, car parks, office buildings or shopping centres. That is why activities that need large surfaces, quiet, nature or special infrastructure naturally move outside the city.
Inside the capital, there are important parks, but they have to meet several needs at the same time: walking, sports, playgrounds, events, green spaces, paths, terraces, dog areas and relaxation. They cannot simultaneously become adventure parks, pool resorts, educational farms and weekend spaces for thousands of people.
There is also the issue of comfort. Many Bucharest residents do not leave the city only for the activity itself, but for the feeling of space. They want easier parking, less noise, cleaner air, distance from apartment blocks and time spent away from the usual congestion. Even if the drive takes 30 to 60 minutes, for many it is worth it because the destination offers a real change of rhythm.
How to choose where to go depending on time and budget
For an outing of a few hours, the closest places are those in Ilfov or on the edge of the capital: Balotești, Pantelimon, Cernica, Mogoșoaia or Snagov. These are suitable for families who do not want to spend the whole day on the road but are looking for an experience different from the one available in the city.
For a full-day trip, destinations farther away can also be considered, such as Domeniul Greaca or other resorts and leisure spaces around Bucharest. In these cases, it is best to check the schedule, costs, dining options, parking and rules for children before leaving.
The budget varies greatly depending on the type of outing. A visit to a farm or an adventure park may have moderate costs, but once activities, food, parking and transport are added, the amount increases. At a spa complex or pool resort, costs may be higher, especially at weekends or during school holidays. That is why planning matters for families: sometimes it is more convenient to go during the week or choose less crowded time slots.
What to remember
People in Bucharest leave the city not only because they want “something different”, but because certain experiences are hard to find in the capital. Large pools, resort-style spaces, adventure parks, educational farms and wide natural areas need land, quiet and infrastructure that the city cannot easily provide.
The three things most often sought around Bucharest are water-based relaxation, outdoor adventure and children’s experiences involving animals, movement and fresh air. Therme Bucharest, Edenland Park, Ferma Animalelor and Domeniul Greaca are just a few examples of places that respond to these needs and explain why many Bucharest residents choose to leave the city at weekends.
In the end, it is not only about what Bucharest lacks, but also about people’s normal need to change the scenery. The capital offers a lot, but it cannot always provide the feeling of holiday, space and nature. For that, the road toward nearby localities has become, for many residents, part of the weekend routine.
