If you want to findra new job or have already been accepted for one, you need to prepare a number of documents, both to prove your identity and qualifications and to comply with Romanian labor laws.

The correct preparation and submission of these documents not only facilitates the hiring process, but also ensures that you benefit from all the legal rights associated with your employment status. In some cases, these documents are also necessary to complete internal company procedures, such as entering payroll, obtaining access cards or setting up additional benefits such as health insurance or meal vouchers.

Here is a detailed list of the documents you need to have on hand:

1. ID - These are needed to prove domicile, residence and identity;

  •     Valid identity card or passport for foreign nationals.
  •     Birth certificate (original and copy) - Although not always required by the employer, it wouldn't hurt to have it handy for your file.

2. Educational documents and qualifications

  •     Diplomas (original and copy) - high school, university, masters, doctorate, etc. As a general rule, the most recent diploma is required.
  •     Certificates of professional qualifications - if applicable (original and copy) - relevant to the post for which you are applying.
  •     Professional or other certificates (original and copy) - depending on the requirements of the job.

3. Documents of professional experience

  •     References from previous employers - sometimes required for certain positions.

4. Medical documents

  •     Medical certificate stating that you are able to work - issued by your GP or an occupational physician.
  •     Specific medical tests, if required by the employer (e.g. for certain professions such as food or medical). If the employer has partnered with a medical clinic, they will send the opinions directly to the company's premises:

5. Tax and bank documents

  •     Personal identification number (CNP) - usually written on your identity card.
  •     Tax Identification Code (CIF) - if you are an authorized individual or have other forms of economic organization.
  •     Bank account - for salary payments. Sometimes the employer may ask for a bank statement or a document confirming the existence of a bank account.

Additional documents for employment

In addition to these mandatory documents, your employer may request and keep on your file the following documents that the employer considers important for the employment relationship:

  •     medical certificate, issued by your family doctor;
  •     copy of marriage certificate, child's birth certificate, divorce decree;
  •     CV - signed and dated by the employee.
  •     certificate from former employer. The latter is obliged to issue you with a certificate of seniority, based on the entries made in the Employee Register.
  •     a copy of your driving license, if applicable;
  •     copy of military record, if applicable;
  •     minutes of receipt of company property (telephone, laptop)
  •     assignment from AJOFM (County Authority for Employment) - if applicable
  •     criminal record - sometimes required for certain positions or fields of activity (e.g. security, education).

If you are a foreign citizen, the following documents will also be required:

  •     Work permit - for non-EU/EEA nationals.
  •     Residence permit - for non-EU/EEA nationals.
  •     Registration certificate - for EU/EEA citizens staying more than 90 days in Romania.
  •     Certificate on available labor force. This is obtained from the County Employment Agency (AJOFM), based on the job offer submitted by the interested employer;
  •     a certificate of recognition of the diploma issued by the National Centre for the Recognition and Equivalence of Studies;

Job acceptance recommendations:

  •     Check job specifications: some jobs may have additional or specific requirements and it is good to be aware of them before signing the contract.
  •     Keep copies of documents: It's useful to have copies of all your documents for contingencies.
  •     Consult with your employer: If you have any questions about the documents required, speak directly to your company representatives or human resources department.
