Combinatul Fondului Plastic

By Bucharest Team

  • LOCATION

Built between 1966 and 1972 by the Romanian Union of Visual Artists, the Combinatul Fondului Plastic was originally conceived as a multifunctional industrial complex for artistic production. Located at 29 Băiculești Street, in Sector 1, the site has evolved into one of Bucharest’s most dynamic contemporary creative hubs.

Initially home to the production of artist-grade paints—a function that still exists today—the complex now houses over 50 artist studios in converted industrial spaces. Artists like Aurel Vlad, Mircea Roman, and the duo Marian and Victoria Zidaru work here, alongside independent galleries such as Sector 1 Gallery, IOMO Gallery, Suprainfinit, and The Institute.

The space blends active creation with bold experimental exhibitions, and opens its doors annually during events like OPEN DOORS, when the public is invited inside the studios. It also hosts festivals such as Bucharest Street Art Fest and cutting-edge curatorial projects—including the large-scale queer exhibition “YOU FEEL ∼ AND DRIFT ∼ AND SING” (2021), featuring over 100 works.

Today, the Combinat stands as a landmark of Bucharest’s contemporary art scene—a place where industry meets experiment, where visitors can witness creativity in progress, in an unpolished, raw space filled with collective energy and authentic artistic expression.
