The National Art Museum of Romania (MNAR) is the most important art museum in the country, housing a vast collection of over 70,000 works. Located in the former Royal Palace in Bucharest, MNAR was founded in 1948 and operates under the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs. Originally the residence of the Romanian monarchs, the building was transformed into a museum after the abdication of King Michael I. Over time, the MNAR has become a major cultural landmark, housing some of Romania's most valuable art collections.
MNAR is a true cultural jewel, holding a valuable patrimony of Romanian and foreign art, organized in two permanent galleries: the National Gallery (which includes the Gallery of Old Romanian Art and the Gallery of Modern Romanian Art) and the Gallery of European Art. The Romanian medieval art section includes icons, frescoes and cult objects from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. The European art collection features works by great masters such as El Greco, Rembrandt and Rubens. The museum also exhibits works of modern and contemporary Romanian art, by renowned artists such as Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ștefan Luchian and Constantin Brâncuși.
In addition to permanent and temporary exhibitions, MNAR organizes various cultural, educational and artistic events, including workshops, conferences and guided tours. These activities aim to promote art and culture, educate the public and stimulate intercultural dialog. The National Art Museum of Romania plays an essential role in the preservation and promotion of the national artistic heritage, being a vibrant center of cultural life in Bucharest and throughout the country.
Moreover, MNAR also has 3 satellite museums - housed in heritage buildings, the Museum of Art Collections, the K.H. Zambaccian Museum and the Theodor Pallady Museum - which present to the public collections reminiscent of the picturesque atmosphere of Bucharest of yesteryear.
