Unirii Square, located in the center of the capital, is one of the most emblematic and crowded squares of the city. Representing a crucial transportation hub and an urban landmark, Unirii Square has witnessed significant transformations over the decades, including in terms of the names it has been given, being renamed 6 times to date.

Union Square (Unirii Square) not only reflects the different historical periods of the city, but has also become a symbol of progress and modern urban life in the capital.

Union Square. History and development

With every step you take in Union Square you step on a slice of history that begins hundreds of years ago. The fact that it has been a kind of "trademark" of Bucharest has meant that the political regimes have always named this space differently, depending on the significant events in history.

In the 19th century, Union Square was called the Great Square. After the Great Union of 1918, it was called Nation Square, and in the 1930s it was renamed June 8 Square, the day King Charles II ascended the throne. Later, when King Mihai I came to the throne, it was called "September 6" Square. From 1950 it was called "March 28" Square, the day on which the first elections for the Grand National Assembly were held. In 1959 the name was changed to Unirii Square, 100 years after the Unification of the two principalities.

Union Square. Features and attractions

- The Union Fountain: One of the most spectacular features of the square is the complex of artesian fountains, which has been recently renovated and modernized. They offer a choice of shows running from Friday to Sunday from June to the end of October and have different themes, with selected tunes complementing the magic created by the play of water and lights.

- Unirii Park: Situated on the south side of the square, this park offers a place for city residents to relax, with shaded walkways, benches and green spaces. The artesian fountains that surround the park contribute to its charm, and the water and light effects add an element of magic to the cityscape.

- Shopping Centers and Office Buildings:
Piața Unirii is home to one of the largest shopping malls in Bucharest, the Unirea Shopping Center, as well as numerous office buildings and shops, making this an important center for business and shopping.
