The quality of education in public and private systems in Romania: Advantages and disadvantages

The quality of education is a determining factor in the formation of future generations, influencing both the personal development and professional success of students. In Bucharest, the choice between public and private schools is often a matter of debate, each option having its own arguments in its favor. Public schools pride themselves on a strong tradition and affordability, offering a standardized curriculum, while private institutions appeal through innovative methods, smaller class sizes and a focus on individual student needs. In an ever-changing educational environment, this comparison between public and private becomes essential to understand how different educational approaches can influence the quality and efficiency of learning in Romania's capital.

Let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of each of these systems:

Curriculum and teaching methods

In Bucharest's public schools (and not only) the curriculum is standardized nationwide. This means that all children have access to the same information that can provide them with a solid knowledge base. For example, in 8th grade, all students will study the same math concepts and take the same exam at the end.

On the other hand, in private schools, such as Avenor College or the American International School in Bucharest, the curriculum can be more flexible. For example, students can study international programs such as Cambridge or the International Baccalaureate (IB), which place greater emphasis on critical thinking and creative projects. Instead of traditional quizzes, students could do presentations or work on group projects, customized to each student's abilities, that help them better understand the material.

Resources and infrastructure

Another important aspect that influences the quality of education is access to resources and infrastructure. Private schools in Bucharest have greater financial resources, which translates into modern facilities, well-equipped labs, gyms and access to state-of-the-art technology. These resources allow for a more diversified and interactive approach to learning, with students having the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities that develop their varied skills and critical thinking.

In contrast, many public schools face challenges of limited infrastructure and resources. Classrooms are often overcrowded and there is little access to modern teaching materials or advanced technology. This can limit the ability of teachers to implement innovative teaching methods, engage students and provide personalized support to each student according to aptitude and preference.

Public vs private teachers

While the quality of education in the private system may appear to be higher than in the public system, it is not infrequently the teachers who make the difference, regardless of infrastructure or other resources. For example, many renowned public schools in Bucharest, such as the National College "Gheorghe Lazăr" or "Mihai Viteazul", have experienced teachers with a strong educational tradition, ensuring a solid preparation for national exams and for later academic life. Also, with a standardized curriculum, students benefit from a balanced education, which provides them with a solid foundation in all core subjects.

Academic performance and later success

When it comes to academic results, statistics show that students in private schools often score higher in national and international exams. This is due, in part, to student selection and the better resources available in private schools. Also, parents who enrol their children in private schools are usually more involved in their children's education, which can positively influence academic performance.

However, success in life is not determined solely by academic performance. Public schools, especially renowned ones in Bucharest, such as the National College "Sfântul Sava" or the National College "Gheorghe Lazăr", have produced graduates who have excelled in various fields, both nationally and internationally. So while private schools may offer a more comfortable and personalized educational environment, the public system should not be underestimated.

Final decision: public or private?

The choice between public and private school is not easy. If you want a more traditional environment, where your child follows a set curriculum and has access to a diverse community, public school might be the right choice. On the other hand, if you can afford it financially and are looking for a personalized learning environment with rich resources and innovative methods, private school might be the ideal choice.

To conclude, the most important thing is that the choice is based on your child's needs and personality, not just the school's reputation or prestige. Whether you choose public or private, the key is to provide ongoing support and involvement in your child's education. After all, a child's success depends not only on the school, but also on the trust, attention and love they receive at home.
