In the heart of the Giulești neighborhood, among streets filled with history and working-class spirit, one of the most beloved symbols of Romanian football was born: Giulești Stadium. Built between 1936 and 1939, this stadium was, from the very beginning, more than just a football pitch – it was a place where passion, loyalty, and community identity came together around the claret and white colors of Rapid Bucharest.
The birth of a symbol: the beginnings of Giulești Stadium
Its construction was a true achievement for that era. In the interwar period, Romania was striving to align itself with European standards, and Rapid – already a respected club – deserved a stadium worthy of its ambitions. The project was completed in 1939, with an initial capacity of around 12,000 seats, an impressive figure for the time.
Giulești was considered an architectural jewel of its era. The main stand, imposing and with remarkable acoustics, offered a splendid view of the field, while the technical facilities – modern locker rooms, administrative offices, and floodlights – were among the most advanced in Europe.
The first match played at the new stadium took place in 1939 and was met with enthusiasm by Rapid’s supporters. From that day on, Giulești became a true spiritual home for Rapid Bucharest, a place where every victory and every defeat were lived with intense emotion.
Glorious decades and the unbreakable spirit of Rapid
After World War II, Giulești Stadium continued to be the stage where Rapid’s history unfolded. During the 1950s and 1960s, the club strengthened its reputation as the team of the working class, especially the railway workers – hence the nickname “the railwaymen.” The stands would vibrate with every goal, and the atmosphere was unlike anything else in Romanian football.
A defining moment came in 1967, when Rapid, led by coach Valentin Stănescu, won its first national championship title. The celebration lasted all night on the streets of Giulești. In recognition of his legacy, the stadium was renamed in 2001 in his honor: Valentin Stănescu Stadium.
The 1970s brought a major modernization of the arena. The stands were expanded, the facilities upgraded, and the total capacity reached over 19,000 seats. It was the golden age of Rapid’s football, when the club won not only trophies but also the hearts of thousands of Romanians. Even during difficult times, when the team was relegated to the second division, the fans kept filling the stands to the brim – a phenomenon unique in Romanian football.
Giulești hosted many unforgettable matches, including international clashes against Torino, Napoli, and Sporting Lisbon. The energy of the fans often turned the stadium into a fortress, and the crowd was known as Rapid’s “twelfth player.”
The Giulești supporters – a unique phenomenon in Romanian football
No other club in Romania can claim a stronger connection between the team and its fans than Rapid Bucharest. The Giulești supporters are renowned for their unmatched passion and devotion, transforming every match into a celebration of the soul.
In Giulești, football was never just a game – it was a way of life. Children grew up waving the claret and white scarves, elders recalled the glory of “Dan Coe’s Rapid” or “Pancu’s Rapid,” and every match became a lesson in loyalty.
The stands echoed with songs that became legendary: “We are Rapid Bucharest!”, “Who’s a Rapidist is happy!”, and the historic anthem “We are at home everywhere,” which has become a true manifesto of the Rapid spirit. The lyrics perfectly capture the club’s philosophy: faith, pride, loyalty, and unconditional love.
Giulești has always been a stadium of pure emotion. The result didn’t matter – the presence in the stands was an act of faith. During the toughest years, when the club went through relegations, financial crises, or even bankruptcy, the supporters never left. Instead, they united even more, proving that Rapid is not just a football club, but a family.
Decline and rebirth: the road to the new Giulești
After decades of glory and emotion, time began to take its toll on the old stadium. Though full of history, the structure no longer met modern safety and comfort standards. In 2018, the authorities made a difficult but necessary decision: to close and completely rebuild the stadium.
It was a painful moment for Rapid fans. Watching the demolition of the old stands felt like losing a part of their soul. Many supporters kept pieces of seats, plaques, or grass as mementos – relics of a sacred place.
Yet the promise was clear: on the site of the old temple, a modern arena would rise, carrying forward the spirit of Giulești.
After four years of waiting, in 2022, the new Rapid Arena – Giulești was inaugurated, an ultramodern stadium with a capacity of approximately 14,000 seats. The design blends elegance and tradition, echoing the interwar style of the original structure while offering state-of-the-art technology that meets UEFA standards.
The new stadium is more than a building – it’s the continuation of a legend. The façade recalls the old arena, while the proximity of the stands to the pitch keeps the intense, intimate connection between players and fans.
A memorial plaque dedicated to Valentin Stănescu was installed in the main stand, and the stadium museum now displays historic jerseys, trophies, and photographs from all eras of the club.
The new Giulești – between tradition and modernity
At the inauguration of the new arena, thousands of fans came together to relive the emotion of the first whistle. Many carried old scarves, vintage jerseys, and memories from the old Giulești. For them, modernization wasn’t a break from the past, but a rebirth – a new chapter in the same story of love and loyalty.
The Rapid Arena – Giulești is today one of the most modern stadiums in Romania. It features advanced locker rooms, conference rooms, VIP areas, a museum, media zones, and a perfectly maintained pitch. But what truly makes it special is the atmosphere.
Even in the new surroundings, the supporters have preserved their energy, songs, banners, and breathtaking choreographies. At every match, the stands turn into a sea of claret and white, and the crowd chants in unison: “We are Rapid!”
Rapid’s anthem and the legacy of Giulești
Throughout time, Rapid Bucharest has been defined not only by its performances but also by a unique spirit, passed down through generations. This spirit lives on in the club’s historic anthem, a song that resonates before every match and has become a symbol of pride for all Giulești fans.
The anthem’s lyrics speak of faith, courage, and dignity – values that Rapid supporters have always embodied. For them, Rapid isn’t measured in trophies but in emotions. Every victory at Giulești has been a triumph of the soul; every defeat, a lesson in unity.
That is why Giulești Stadium is not just a physical place. It is a space of collective memory, a temple of emotions that has brought together entire generations. From the old stands echoing with chants from the 1940s to the new seats of the 2022 arena, everything breathes Rapid.
Giulești – more than a stadium, a way of life
For Rapid supporters, Giulești means home. Not just a stadium, but a place of reunion, of memories, of dreams. Here, defeats have been mourned, victories have been celebrated, friendships have been born, and stories have been told.
Generations of Rapid fans have carried forward a legacy of over eight decades. In every corner of Giulești, one can feel the vibration of the past: the voice of Valentin Stănescu, the determination of legendary players, the tears of fans who never stopped believing.
Today, when Rapid Bucharest plays at the new Giulești, each match is a return to essence. The spirit of the old stadium hasn’t disappeared – it has transformed, modernized, but remained alive.
Giulești will always be the place where football is not just competition, but passion, identity, and faith. A stadium that belongs not only to Rapid but to the entire history of Romanian football. For all Rapid fans, one phrase remains eternally true: “Giulești is never forgotten. Giulești is felt.”
