Bucharest residents may face higher public transport fares, according to proposals discussed at the Bucharest City Hall. The Mayor of the Capital, Ciprian Ciucu, announced that a price increase is being considered against the backdrop of a difficult financial situation at the municipal level.
Discussions at City Hall: what the proposals show
During a working meeting held on Thursday at the Bucharest City Hall, new prices for travel tickets were analyzed, covering both single tickets and subscriptions. For now, these changes remain at the proposal stage and have not received final approval.
How much an STB journey could increase
According to the options discussed, the 90-minute metropolitan journey could see the following increases:
- 1 journey (90 min): 3 lei → 5 lei
- 2 journeys (90 min): 6 lei → 10 lei
- 10 journeys: 25 lei → 40 lei
STB subscriptions: increases across all durations
Subscriptions could also be adjusted as follows:
- 24 hours: 8 lei → 14 lei
- 72 hours: 20 lei → 30 lei
- 7 days: 30 lei → 45 lei
- 1 month: 80 lei → 100 lei
- 1 year: 700 lei → 900 lei
Integrated STB + metro tickets also under consideration
For the integrated STB–metro option (120-minute validity), the proposals indicate:
- 1 STB + metro journey (120 min): 7 lei → 9 lei
- 2 STB + metro journeys: 14 lei → 18 lei
- Integrated 24-hour pass: 18 lei → 22 lei
- Integrated 1-month pass: 160 lei → 180 lei
- Integrated 1-year pass: 1,410 lei → 1,600 lei

What comes next following the proposed STB fare increases
Although these fares are, for the moment, only proposals, they reflect the growing budgetary pressure on public transport in the Capital. If approved, they would represent some of the most significant fare increases in recent years, at a time when public transport remains one of the main alternatives to Bucharest’s increasingly congested traffic.
