How to avoid pickpockets on public transport in Bucharest

Bucharest is a fairly safe city in terms of citizen safety. However, whether we are talking about tourists or inhabitants of the capital, young or old, it is good to know the main safety measures when using the STB or other means of public transportation.
1. Keep your bag closed - Yes, Bucharest is a safe city, but not so much that you keep your bag on your shoulder without pulling its zipper (The important thing is to use bags that are not easily openable, preferably with zipper and not stapled). You never know how tempted the person next to you will be to reach out more than they have to, so don't give them any reasons!
2. Carry your bags in front or diagonally across your chest - Once you've zipped up your bag, make sure you don't forget it behind you, out of sight. It would be good to have it easily in sight, especially if there are a lot of people on the bus.
3. Watch your pockets - It's not enough to just secure your bag, you also need to be careful with your pockets, especially if you usually keep your money or phone in them. Our advice is not to use the back pockets, but to zip up the side pockets or simply keep your hand on the items you've put in them; sometimes it's easier to steal from a pocket than from a bag.
4. Hide your wallet in a buttoned or zippered pocket out of sight - Even if you've closed the bag tightly, be careful not to leave your wallet on top of other items; the thief may be so skilled that he can undo the zipper easily, but it's hard to believe he'll rummage through the bag without feeling!
5. Keep or write down a separate list of family contact numbers in case your phone is stolen - Do you know the numbers of the people closest to you by heart? If not, it might not hurt to memorize one or two. You never know when you'll be without your phone and you might want to let them know that you're safe.
6. Keep a copy of important documents such as your plane ticket, passport and credit cards in a separate place in case they are stolen - If you are a tourist out and about, you may not want to take important documents with you, or at least leave copies of them at your hotel.
7. Watch out for out-of-the-ordinary behavior: If someone talks to you too much, there may be someone behind you who is too interested in your personal belongings; if, for example, a conflict has broken out in the same place you are in, be careful that it was not provoked on purpose, so as to distract attention from pickpockets who are taking advantage of travelers' inattention.
