Infertility affects approximately one in six couples in Romania, and Bucharest has become a true medical hub in recent years, with well-equipped private clinics, internationally trained doctors, and access to state-funded programs. If you and your partner are struggling to conceive, this guide gives you a clear picture of the best options available in the capital.

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive procedure in which eggs are retrieved, fertilized in a laboratory with sperm, and the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus. A full cycle typically lasts 4–6 weeks, from the start of ovarian stimulation to embryo transfer. Surplus embryos can be cryopreserved for future use.

Eligibility criteria: age between 20 and 45, Romanian citizenship with Romanian domicile, active health insurance, infertility diagnosis and medical recommendation for IVF. Both married and unmarried couples, as well as single women, are eligible. The program was active in 2025 and is pending approval for 2026 — check mmuncii.gov.ro for updates.

Bucharest FIV3 Project (ASSMB): A local program run by Bucharest City Hall for couples and single women with domicile in Bucharest, active during 2025–2026. Confirmed partner clinic: Umana Fertility. Check with your chosen clinic whether combining both programs is permitted.

When Should You See a Specialist?

Following standard medical guidelines: if you are under 35 and have been trying for over 12 months without success, it's time for a specialist consultation. Between 35 and 40 — after 6 months of trying. Over 40 — as soon as you decide you want to conceive.

Bucharest offers a mature fertility medical ecosystem, with well-equipped clinics, doctors trained to European and international standards, and significant public funding programs that can dramatically reduce costs. The first step remains the same regardless of clinic: an initial consultation to identify the cause of infertility and establish the right treatment plan.
