For many pensioners in Bucharest, going out does not only mean taking a walk or solving administrative errands. It means contact with other people, activities that give rhythm to the week, conversations, light exercise, games, courses, workshops, cultural events or simply a place where they do not feel alone. In a large city, where families are often busy and neighbours no longer know each other as they once did, socialization becomes a real need, not a luxury.

Bucharest has several day centres, senior clubs, libraries, public programmes and NGO initiatives where active older adults can go to spend time with people of their age. Some services are intended only for residents of a certain district, others are available for people with domicile or residence in Bucharest, while some work based on registration and a file. That is why, before going to a location, it is best to check by phone the schedule, access conditions and required documents.

Senior clubs in Sector 1

In Sector 1, the City Hall announces that it provides seniors, through DGASPC Sector 1, with dedicated spaces where they can take part in occupational therapy courses, medical recovery, psychological counselling, dance, music and recreational events. According to information published by Sector 1 City Hall, registration requires an identity card, proving membership of the community, and the pension slip.

The locations indicated by Sector 1 City Hall are Bunicii Comunității, at 18 Barbu Delavrancea Street, phone 021.222.57.45, Central Club, at 20 Ion Câmpineanu Street, mezzanine, phone 031.426.00.34, and Senior Parc, in Bazilescu Park, phone 0734.454.544. These are useful for seniors who want regular activities, not just occasional events.

Another important location is the “Senior Expert” Day Centre for Socialization and Leisure, administered by DGASPC Sector 1. The centre is located at 18 Barbu Delavrancea Street, Sector 1, phone 021.222.57.45 and email clubul.seniorilor@dgaspc-sector1.ro. For pensioners in the district, it can be a good starting point for finding out what activities are available and how registration works.

Centres and clubs for seniors in Sectors 2, 3 and 4

In Sector 2, one useful location is the “Basarabia” Day Centre for Older Adults, also known as “Clubul Înțelepților”. According to DGASPC Sector 2, the centre provides social services for older adults in the local community, with the aim of combating marginalization and offering a space where members can spend their free time in a useful and pleasant way. On the official page of the “Clubul Înțelepților” Day Centre, activities include recreational activities, film screenings, music listening sessions, dancing, birthday and name-day celebrations, special events and outdoor walks.

In Sector 3, there are two important senior clubs. “Râmnicu Sărat” Senior Club operates at 1 Aleea Râmnicu Sărat, Sector 3, has public working hours Monday to Friday, 09:00-16:00, and can be contacted at 021.344.65.51 or 0729.330.556. Also, “Codrii Neamțului” Senior Club is located at 4 Codrii Neamțului Street, Sector 3, phone 021.345.64.09.

For Sector 3, registration is done based on an application and documents submitted at the club headquarters or at DGASPC Sector 3, 2-4 Parfumului Street. Sector 3 City Hall announced in 2025 that seniors can receive information about the clubs at 021.345.64.09 for “Codrii Neamțului” and 021.344.65.51 for “Râmnicu Sărat”, according to its communication about free clubs for seniors in Sector 3.

In Sector 4, a useful address is the “Covasna” Senior Club Day Centre, located at 3 bis Covasna Street. DGASPC Sector 4 describes it as a modern day centre with a capacity of 80 places per day, intended for pensioners in the district, for socialization, board games, library access, recovery, medical office and other activities. Access and participation in activities are free, and registration requires a copy of the identity card, a copy of the pension slip, a certificate from the family doctor and a standard application. The centre’s phone number is 0783.043.736, and the email address is clubul.seniorilor@dgaspc4.ro.

Senior clubs in Sector 6

Sector 6 has one of the clearest public networks of senior clubs. According to DGASPC Sector 6, Sector 6 Senior Club is a social assistance unit for older adults in the district, aimed at involving them in socialization activities, leisure activities, maintaining an active life and preventing isolation.

The club operates in four locations. These are “I.L. Caragiale” Senior Club, at 15 1 Mai Boulevard, with 100 places per day, “Mihail Sadoveanu” Senior Club, at 73 Timișoara Boulevard, with 50 places per day, “Stela Popescu” Senior Club, at 44 Calea Crângași, ground floor of the building, with 50 places per day, and “Iulia Hasdeu” Senior Club, at 3 Șoseaua Virtuții, with a capacity of 100 places.

The schedule announced by DGASPC Sector 6 is Monday to Thursday, 09:00-16:00, and Friday, 09:00-14:00. At these clubs, seniors can take part in recreational, cultural, artistic, movement or socialization activities, depending on the programme of each location. For people living in Drumul Taberei, Militari, Crângași, Giulești or nearby areas, the Sector 6 club network may be one of the most accessible options.

Centres open at Bucharest municipality level

Not all options depend exclusively on the district where the pensioner lives. The General Directorate of Social Assistance of the Municipality of Bucharest has the “Perla” Day Centre for Older Adults, located at 1-3 Șoseaua Ștefan cel Mare, Sector 1, on the ground floor of the building with Restaurant Perla. The published schedule is Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:00, and the contact phone number is 0753.065.331.

The “Perla” Centre promotes active ageing and offers socialization activities, psychological counselling, gymnastics for maintaining mobility, social counselling, medical assistance, library access, film screenings, music therapy, occupational therapy, artistic activities, thematic discussion groups and training courses in various fields, including using a computer or mobile phone. DGASMB states that services are free, but a complete file and a decision granting the services are required.

Another useful option, especially for lonely older adults, is the Socialization Centre of the Niciodată Singur Association, located in Bucharest at 4 Intrarea Mântuleasa. According to the organization, the senior socialization centres operate Monday to Friday, between 10:00 and 13:00, as spaces for socialization and activities for the association’s beneficiaries. This option may be suitable for people who mainly need company, conversation and activities in a friendly setting.

Libraries, a good option for seniors who want cultural activities

For pensioners who do not necessarily want a senior club, but a quiet place where they can read, attend events or learn new things, libraries are a very good option. The Bucharest Metropolitan Library has 31 branches in the city, and on its official website it states that, based on the BibMet card, readers can borrow or read in any branch, browse the internet and take part in the events and programmes organized. Information is available on the Bucharest Metropolitan Library website.

For seniors, libraries can be useful not only for reading, but also for discreet socialization. Some branches host workshops, meetings, book launches, reading clubs or digital literacy programmes. The BMB website also has a page dedicated to IT courses for seniors, useful for people who want to learn how to use their phone, computer or the internet better.

The central office of the Bucharest Metropolitan Library is at 4 Tache Ionescu Street, Sector 1. According to the BMB contact page, the phone number is 021.316.83.01, and the email address is biblioteca@bibmet.ro. For activities, seniors should check the schedule of the branch closest to home, as events differ from one library to another.

How to choose the right place

The first criterion is proximity to home. For a senior, an excellent club located one hour away may become difficult to attend regularly. A centre located a few bus, tram or metro stops away can be much more useful, even if it has fewer activities. Socialization works best when it can be easily integrated into the weekly routine.

The second criterion is the type of activity. Some people want light exercise, gymnastics, dancing or recovery. Others prefer chess, backgammon, rummy, reading, music, artistic workshops, thematic discussions or trips. It is best for the senior to ask directly what activities are taking place during that period, because the programme may vary from one month to another.

The third criterion is the access condition. Some centres are for residents of the respective district, others for people with domicile or residence in Bucharest. Usually, documents such as identity card, pension slip, standard application and, in some cases, a certificate from the family doctor are required. To avoid unnecessary trips, a phone call before the first visit is recommended.

What to remember

For pensioners in Bucharest who want and are able to leave home, there are several socialization options: senior clubs organized by city halls and DGASPC offices, day centres, libraries, cultural programmes and NGO initiatives. Most operate based on registration, and some are free for residents of the district or municipality.

The most useful addresses to check are the clubs in Sector 1, the centres in Sector 3, the Covasna Senior Club in Sector 4, the four-club network in Sector 6, the “Perla” Centre of DGASMB and the branches of the Bucharest Metropolitan Library. For each of them, it is important to check the schedule, available places and required documents by phone.

Socializing in retirement should not be seen as a luxury. For many older adults, it is a way of preventing loneliness, maintaining emotional health and keeping an active rhythm. In a large city like Bucharest, a senior club, a library or a day centre can become not just places for activities, but spaces where people regain a sense of belonging.
