Bucharest's Summer Gardens. We Found the Coolest Ones

- 27 MAY 26
When summer arrives in Bucharest, the city shifts into a different gear. Terraces push their chairs outside, the air smells of linden blossoms and warm asphalt, and after six in the evening people start drifting toward any corner that offers shade and a cold drink. Bucharest in summer can be overwhelming — the traffic, the heat rising off the pavements, the constant noise. But if you know where to look, the city hides gardens where all of that disappears suddenly, as if you've stepped through a secret door.
Olari — the courtyard that smells like summer rain
Strada Olari 8 looks like any other address in the Armenian quarter, until you step inside. Then you find old walls covered in ivy, a hundred-year-old stable turned into a bar, and that specific quality of places that were never designed to impress and for that very reason do. The smell of hops and basil drifting from the food truck in the courtyard, rough wooden tables marked by glasses from previous evenings, music at a decent volume — Olari is the place that comes to mind automatically when someone says "let's go grab a beer somewhere", and that's the most honest compliment you can pay a place.
Sera Eden — the bamboo and the cocktail
On CA Rosetti 37, behind an unassuming gate, sits probably the most beautiful architectural story among Bucharest's gardens. Sera Eden grew up in the courtyard of the Brătianu family manor — a neglected building flanked by the Vietnamese and Hungarian embassies — and transformed it into a space of glass and scaffolding, with bamboo along the fences, brick underfoot and a bar with a thick white marble counter. In summer, the exotic vegetation around it creates the sensation that you're somewhere between a corner of Southeast Asia and a secret garden in the middle of Europe. The house specialty is mixology, and you feel that in every glass.
Verona and OAR — two worlds on the same street
Arthur Verona 13-15 is the garden everyone knows — and for good reason. Over 400 seats under the shade of mature trees, vegetation that genuinely keeps the heat out, lemonade, beer, proper food and the energy of a summer evening right in the city centre. It's the place you choose when you're coming with a big group and want to be sure you'll find a spot. A few steps further up the street, Grădina OAR has a completely different atmosphere — wicker furniture, discreet plantings, a quiet that feels almost surprising given what surrounds it, perfect for a long conversation or simply for sitting with a spritz and not being in any hurry.
Simbio — the quince trees and Sunday brunch
On Negustori 26, behind a beautiful building, a few old quince trees do the best possible job in summer: dense shade and natural coolness. Simbio is the place with regulars who come back week after week, especially on Sunday for brunch — eggs benedict, juicy burgers, good coffee. The terrace is small, so a reservation ahead of time doesn't hurt.
Lente Arcului — the villa with books and the garden for good conversation
An interwar villa, a garden full of greenery and a mini-library with over a hundred books inside — Lente Arcului is the place where time genuinely moves differently. They have a fireplace for cooler evenings, an attic space for film nights and small concerts, and a garden that reminds you of your grandparents' backyard, but with better food. A short, well-considered menu — duck breast, stuffed pork with polenta — serious cooking without unnecessary fuss.
Grădina Floreasca — the pool and the escape from the centre
Mircea Eliade 16 is further out, but it's the only place on this list with a swimming pool — and that completely changes the equation of a July afternoon. Open space, plenty of greenery, the feeling of being on holiday without leaving the city. Worth the detour.
All these places fill up fast once the first warm weekend arrives, and May is still the moment when you can show up without planning three days ahead. Make the most of it.
