Colțea Hospital is one of the oldest and most renowned medical institutions in Bucharest, Romania, with a long history and a major significance in the development of the Romanian health system. Today, this hospital continues to be a pillar of modern healthcare and medical education.
Colțea Hospital. History
Colțea Hospital is the first hospital in Bucharest, founded in 1704 by the laird Mihai Cantacuzino as part of a larger complex that also included a church and a school. Inspired by the hospitals he had seen on his travels through Europe, Cantacuzino wanted to create a place where free medical care could be provided to those in need. Like most of the hospitals built for the poor at the time, the role of this institution was to help the rich make amends by helping the poor. Initially, the hospital had only a few dozen beds, but it quickly became an important center of treatment and charity in Bucharest.
Colțea Hospital. Architecture and location
The Colțea Complex is located in the center of Bucharest, on I.C. Brătianu Boulevard, very close to University Square. The building reflects the specific architectural styles of the time, with Brâncovenetian influences. This style, characterized by a combination of oriental and western elements, is visible in the ornamental details and general structure of the buildings.
In the 19th century, the hospital underwent a series of significant renovations and extensions. The architect Paul Gottereau, known for his contributions to Bucharest architecture, was one of those responsible for modernizing the hospital. He brought influences of neoclassical and eclectic styles, visible in the facades and details of the buildings.
In the 2000s, Colțea Hospital underwent extensive restoration and modernization to meet contemporary medical requirements while preserving the historical and architectural integrity of the complex. These works were essential to preserve the hospital's unique character, combining modern construction techniques with respect for the original design.
