A Date in Bucharest Without Dinner or a Movie: Seven Ideas for Couples Who Want to Try Something Different

Dinner at a restaurant, a movie, a coffee date. These are often the first things that come to mind when planning time together. But Bucharest offers plenty of other experiences, from creative workshops and board game nights to dancing, historic neighbourhood walks and stargazing.
You don't need a special occasion or a big budget. Sometimes, trying something new together is enough to turn an ordinary evening into a memorable date.
1. Paint ceramics at a creative workshop
Painting a mug, plate or decorative object together can be surprisingly entertaining. You don't need artistic experience, and you'll each have something handmade to take home.
Bucharest hosts ceramic painting workshops, including events where all the necessary materials are provided. One such event was previously held at Vila Florilor, at 94B Cuza Vodă Street.
For your next date, look for upcoming ceramic painting sessions and check whether materials are included in the price. The Vila Florilor event is an example of a past workshop, rather than a permanent activity.
2. Challenge each other to a board game night
If you enjoy a little friendly competition, try a board game date. You might discover who is the better strategist, who negotiates more convincingly or who takes losing a little too seriously.
At Fabrica, located at 50 11 Iunie Street, you can explore board gaming activities organised through Creative Board Gaming. Another option is KALI Caffe, at 77 Lipscani Street, which hosts board game events.
Choose a two-player game or a cooperative one where you have to solve problems together. Check the event schedule, availability and participation conditions before visiting.
3. Explore Bucharest on a themed walking tour
When was the last time you really looked at the buildings you pass every day? A themed walking tour can turn an ordinary stroll into a date filled with unexpected discoveries.
You can join a guided history or architecture tour, or create your own route through Cotroceni, the Armenian Quarter or Calea Victoriei.
Pick a few historic buildings, discover their stories and continue exploring without a strict itinerary. It's also one of the few date ideas that can be completely free.

4. Learn salsa or bachata together
You don't have to know how to dance to sign up for a beginner's class. In fact, learning the steps together, making mistakes and laughing about them can be part of the fun.
Salsa Factory, at 71 Șoseaua Panduri, and GINGA Studios, at 18 Constantin Mille Street, offer Latin dance classes, including beginner-level sessions.
Both schools have advertised introductory lessons free of charge under certain conditions. Check current availability and the class format before booking, as some group lessons involve rotating partners.
5. Go stargazing at the Astronomical Observatory
For a different kind of evening date, visit the Amiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory, at 21 Lascăr Catargiu Boulevard.
You can learn about planets, stars and the universe, and when weather conditions allow, take part in telescope observations. The usual visiting hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 2 PM to 10 PM, and a standard adult ticket costs 20 RON.
The building itself has an unusual history. It was commissioned by an admiral with a passion for astronomy. You can read more in the story of the astronomical observatory built by one of Romania's War of Independence heroes.
6. Take a leisurely walk through the Botanical Garden
Not every date needs an organised activity. Sometimes, spending a couple of hours walking together, without checking your phones or rushing anywhere, is exactly what you need.
The Dimitrie Brândză Botanical Garden, at 32 Șoseaua Cotroceni, is particularly appealing in autumn, when its trees and pathways are filled with seasonal colours.
Between October 16 and March 15, the outdoor areas are generally open from 9 AM to 4 PM. For an evening experience during the 2026–2027 season, you can also consider Lumina Park, a light installation exhibition hosted in the garden, with separate tickets and opening hours.
7. Visit an exhibition and discover each other's favourites
A museum visit can become an interesting date when you don't feel pressured to see everything. Choose your favourite artwork or exhibit, explain what caught your attention and discover how differently you might interpret the same thing.
At the National Museum of Maps and Old Books, at 39 Londra Street, you can explore historic maps, atlases and fascinating representations of the world.
Until November 15, 2026, the museum is also hosting the temporary exhibition The Story in the Frame, dedicated to the decorative details and symbolism of historic maps. Its regular opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 6 PM.
Before your visit, you can also discover the history of the National Museum of Maps and Old Books and the historic mansion that houses it.
A Great Date Doesn't Have to Be Expensive
Especially in long-term relationships, spending time together can easily become a matter of grocery shopping, household chores and discussing everything that needs to get done.
Trying something different won't magically change a relationship's routine, but it can create an opportunity to have fun, learn something new or simply give each other your full attention.
You don't even have to enjoy exactly the same activities. Sometimes, the most interesting part of a date is discovering what genuinely excites your partner.
And if you're looking for more affordable experiences, explore romantic date ideas in Bucharest that don't require an extravagant budget.
