The Palace of the Bucharest Stock Exchange

By Bucharest Team

  • LOCATION

The Palace of the Bucharest Stock Exchange is one of those emblematic buildings that doesn’t shout, but commands presence. Built between 1906 and 1912, based on the plans of architect Ștefan Burcuș, the palace is a refined example of Beaux-Arts style from the Belle Époque era, featuring a monumental façade, wide arcades, and details that blend academic rigor with subtle decorative flourishes. Originally designed as the headquarters of the Bucharest Stock Exchange and Chamber of Commerce, the building embodied the ambitions of a rising economic elite eager to assert its public role.

In 1955, the palace became home to the Central State Library, later incorporated into the National Library of Romania—a functional shift that preserved the structure but blurred its original identity. Today, although it no longer houses stock or library activity, the building has been carefully restored and is occasionally used for cultural events, exhibitions, and conferences—though it has yet to fully reintegrate into the city’s everyday life.

How to get there: The Stock Exchange Palace is located in Sector 3, at 11 Doamnei Street, just a short walk from University Square, and very close to Suțu Palace. The nearest metro station is Universitate.
