Where to Find a Clean Public Toilet in Bucharest — the city with one per 5,000 people

If you're in the city center and suddenly need a bathroom, you already know how it goes: you look around, find nothing obvious, and end up walking into the nearest Starbucks. That's not bad luck — Bucharest has 424 public toilets for over two million residents, which works out to roughly one per 5,000 people. But there are better options than improvising, if you know where to look.
Automatic cabins: the only public option you can walk into without thinking twice
The automatic cabins connected to the sewage system are by far the most reliable public toilets in the city. They self-clean after every use — seat, walls, floor — so if you arrive right after someone else, your chances are good. The display on the door tells you directly whether it's free, occupied, or out of order, which already removes one layer of uncertainty.
Sector 1 has 22 of these automatic cabins, with an active maintenance contract running through the end of 2026. Specific locations: Bd. Aviatorilor – Piața Victoriei, Bd. Constantin Prezan – Șoseaua Kiseleff, and Calea Griviței / Bd. Ion Mihalache. All of them operate around the clock — the only district in Bucharest with this setup.
If you're in the Floreasca, Colentina, or Pantelimon areas, there are similar options in parks: Parcul Circului has 4 cabins running 24/7, Parcul Pantelimon has 2, and Parcul Plumbuita II on Șoseaua Colentina nr. 57-61 also operates non-stop.
The big parks: fine in the morning, less reliable in the evening
Herăstrău, Cișmigiu, Tineretului, Carol, Titan — all of them have toilets near the main entrances or around the park restaurants. Half of Bucharest's public toilets operate between 7:00 AM and 9:00–10:00 PM, so after that you're on your own.
One detail that matters in summer: the mobile ecological cabins — the plastic ones, not the automatic ones — can become unusable by the afternoon if they've been heavily used since morning. They can't be emptied on the spot without disturbing park visitors, so in practice everyone avoids them by midday. Early morning they're fine. At lunchtime it's a matter of luck. If you're in a park, look for the automatic cabin, not the plastic one.
Parks with 24/7 automatic toilets include Herăstrău (11 cabins along the main paths), Cișmigiu (2 cabins), Parcul Bordei (2 cabins), and Parcul Patinoar Floreasca (1 cabin).
The metro: ten stations have toilets, free of charge
The metro wasn't designed with bathrooms — it was built during communism without accounting for them — and yet ten stations today have functioning toilets, accessible without paying.
The cleanest ones in the network: stations 1 Decembrie 1918, Piața Victoriei 2, Laminorului, and Străulești tend to be better maintained and more consistently stocked. Worth avoiding if you have another option: Parc Bazilescu and Jiului have consistently received poor marks for cleanliness.
Malls: the safest bet at any hour
If you're near a mall, it's the easiest solution. AFI Cotroceni, ParkLake, Sun Plaza, Băneasa Shopping City, and Promenada all have toilets with frequent maintenance staff, soap, toilet paper, and are generally clean even in the evening. Entry is free, no purchase required — you walk in, use it, walk out.
Coffee chains and gas stations: the street-level fallback
On the street, in the center or commercial areas, a chain café or a gas station sorts things out quickly. Gas stations have clean toilets at most of their stations, some open 24/7. Chain cafés will generally let you use the bathroom without buying anything if you ask politely — especially outside peak hours. It's not an ideal system, but it works reliably.
