“Tannhäuser” opens the new season at the Bucharest National Opera, Horațiu Mălăele brings “The Cherry Orchard” to the National Theatre, and cinemas welcome films starring Tom Cruise, Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. October also begins with new exhibitions, followed by the National Theatre Festival in the second half of the month.

“Tannhäuser”: a new production opens the Bucharest National Opera season

On 1 and 3 October, at 18:00, the Bucharest National Opera presents its new production of Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”. The performances open the 2026–2027 season, with Cristian Mandeal conducting, Alexander von Pfeil directing and stage design by Dragoș Buhagiar.

The opera explores the conflict between desire, faith and the need for forgiveness. For audiences hoping to discover the new production at its first performances, these two evenings are key dates at the beginning of the month. “The Cherry Orchard”: the official premiere of Horațiu Mălăele’s production at TNB

On 4 October, at 19:00, the Studio Hall of the “I.L. Caragiale” National Theatre hosts the official premiere of “The Cherry Orchard” (“Livada de vișini”), adapted from A.P. Chekhov and directed by Horațiu Mălăele. The production is a collaboration with Metropolis Theatre and the “George Coșbuc” Municipal Cultural Centre in Bistrița.

There is an important distinction in the schedule: the first public performance takes place on 30 September, followed by another performance on 1 October. TNB describes the evening of 4 October as the “official premiere”, a celebratory performance. This is therefore the date of the formal premiere event, rather than the first time audiences will see the production.

The play centres on the disappearance of a familiar world and the characters’ difficulty in accepting change. For audiences interested in fresh interpretations of classic texts, the production is one of the new additions to Bucharest’s theatre repertoire.

“Prezumții”: an exhibition opening with visual art and music at the Romanian Peasant Museum

The first day of the month also brings the opening of “Prezumții”, an exhibition organised by the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation and the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant. The opening takes place on Thursday, 1 October, at 17:30, in the Tancred Bănățeanu Hall, with free admission.

The exhibition brings together 47 works by 35 artists, including current scholarship recipients and alumni of the Young Talents programme. Curated by Ion Anghel, the selection includes painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking and other forms of visual expression. The opening evening will also feature a musical performance by scholarship recipients.

If you cannot attend the opening, the exhibition runs until 8 October. The announced visiting hours are Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00, so the exhibition dates do not mean the hall is open every day.

Romanian Creative Week brings exhibition openings to gardens and the city centre

RCW X Bucharest runs from 2 to 8 October, marking its second Bucharest edition. The programme combines projects conceived for the capital with exhibitions previously presented in Iași and adapted to new spaces. These are therefore local openings, rather than world premieres of every work on display.

One date to note is 3 October, at 16:00, when the Romanian Athenaeum Garden hosts the openings of “Pietre de Hotar”, curated by Andrei Bodnar, and “Synthetic Daisy”, by Miki Velciov. Admission is free, according to the organisers. Later that day, at 16:30, the Central University Library hosts the opening of “Fragile Thoughts”, an installation by Georgea Dura and Andrei Cozlac, also with free admission. romaniancreativeweek.ro

New films in October: from “Digger” and “Verity” to “Delta sălbatică”

“Digger” and “Verity” are scheduled for release in Romanian cinemas on 2 October, according to their Cinema City listings. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, “Digger” stars Tom Cruise as a powerful man trying to save the world from a disaster he has caused himself. Michael Showalter’s “Verity” stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson in a story about a writer hired to continue the work of an author who has suffered an accident.

The month’s release calendar also includes European cinema, Romanian comedy and documentary filmmaking. The dates below refer to theatrical releases in Romania, rather than gala screenings with special guests or world premieres.

The National Theatre Festival begins on 16 October

The National Theatre Festival takes place from 16 to 25 October 2026, marking its 36th edition. The organisers announce 36 productions in the official selection and, across the full performance programme, 88 performances in 24 Bucharest venues.

For audiences, the festival offers a chance to see productions from theatres across Romania alongside guest performances in the capital. The programme also includes talks, exhibitions, book launches and staged readings. These complement the main theatre selection, although not every event is a premiere. fnt.ro
