Bucharest is a big city with a varied public transportation system that can seem overwhelming at first. But with a little effort and a little information, you'll discover that getting around the capital can be simple and efficient, if you stick to public transportation (because transportation by private car is another, longer and... more... crowded article 😊).

Here are some tips and tricks to help you make your way around Bucharest's public transportation easier.

Metro: the fastest way to get around

In Bucharest, the metro remains one of the fastest and most efficient ways to get across the city, avoiding congested surface traffic. The metro system is well organized, with five main lines covering most of the city's key areas. Each line is identified by a different color and has clearly marked stations.

To use the metro, you'll need a travel card, which you can buy from ticket counters or vending machines in metro stations. The card must be loaded with credit, and rides are deductible based on available credit. What's more, you can also pay with your contactless bank card directly at the gates.

Buses: an extensive and convenient network

The bus network in Bucharest (STB) is extensive and covers areas that are not reached by the metro. Buses run frequently and are a good choice for shorter distances or to reach areas less accessible by metro. Each bus line has a specific number and route, which is displayed at bus stops.

The travel card used for the metro is also valid for buses, and tickets can also be bought from ticket machines in stations. You can also pay by SMS to 7458, and the payment is valid for the use of all surface public transport. In addition, mobile transport apps can be very useful for checking timetables and planning routes.

Trams: a necessary and more scenic option

Trams in Bucharest are not only functional and necessary, but also a scenic way to explore the city. They run on routes passing through central and historic areas, offering a pleasant view of the city. It's true that trams are often slower than the metro and buses, but they're great for a relaxed stroll and seeing the city from a different perspective.

As with buses, the transportation card can also be used for trams. It's important to check the line number and direction to make sure you're heading in the direction you want.

To efficiently navigate public transport in Bucharest, you can use mobile apps such as STB, Google Maps or City Transport, which provide real-time information about routes and timetables. These apps are useful for planning your trips and checking for delays or changes in the schedule.
