The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (MȚR)

By Bucharest Team

  • LOCATION

The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (MȚR) is one of the most important cultural institutions in Romania dedicated to traditional rural life. Housed in a heritage building in Neo-Romanian architectural style, the museum features an impressive collection of authentic artifacts: from folk costumes and painted icons to tools, furniture, and everyday household objects

Both its permanent and temporary exhibitions are curated with a distinct visual poetry and simplicity, avoiding rigid or didactic displays. MȚR is a living space that fosters dialogue between tradition and contemporary culture, through cultural events, artisan fairs, film screenings, concerts, and workshops for children. It also hosts Cinema Muzeul Țăranului, one of the city’s most beloved venues for arthouse cinema, as well as a bohemian café and a shop with handmade crafts. More than just a museum, MȚR serves as a space of memory, reflection, and cultural recovery.

How to get there: The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant is located at 3 Kiseleff Boulevard, Sector 1, right across from Piața Victoriei. It’s easily accessible by metro – Piața Victoriei station, as well as by trams 24 and 42, or buses 205, 381, 100.
