The Central University Library „Carol I”, located at 1 Boteanu Street, is the main academic library serving the University of Bucharest and the broader scholarly community. Housed in an imposing historic building, the library features both grand reading halls and modern study areas fitted with individual workstations and group rooms. Its collections span over 2 million volumes, covering disciplines from the humanities and social sciences to psychology, law, and natural sciences.
Affiliated with the central site are 16 specialized branches across campus, each focused on specific fields such as psychology, informatics, and engineering. Access is open to students, faculty, and registered public readers, with borrowing privileges and electronic resource access. The library offers a rich digital infrastructure, including subscriptions to major academic databases and online journals.
With regular cultural and academic events like author talks, exhibitions, and workshops, it remains both a learning hub and cultural landmark. Its hours are structured to support both daytime studying and evening research activities.
How to get there:
Take the metro to Universitate station (lines M1/M2), then walk about 5 minutes along Strada Edgar Quinet to reach the entrance on Boteanu Street. The library is open Monday–Friday from early morning until late evening, with weekend and holiday hours available online.
